A few weeks ago, may daughter and I spent 24-hours in San Francisco on our way to meet up with a friend in Sonoma County. Though I had been many times, this was my daughter’s first visit to the City by the Bay. With so much to see and do, I was torn on how to make sure the vibe of the city captivated her and made her want to come back for more. It came down to a mix of tradition, luxury, and some typical tourist spots to make those 24-hours the best possible. Here’s what we did:

San Francisco City Collage

We stayed at the Four Seasons San Francisco on Market Street. Convenient to shopping, dining and attractions within walking distance. The Four Seasons San Francisco was the perfect home base for us. fourseasons.com/sanfrancisco

High Tea is a tradition my mother introduced to me as I started my travel adventures. The first time I had high tea was in San Francisco at the Westin St. Francis. After that, the Ritz-Carlton in Madrid, the Palm Court at the Park Lane Hotel in London, followed by countless hotels in New York, Chicago, Las Vegas…the list goes on. I started the tradition with my daughter on our first trip to New York City with the Madeline Tea, and we make it a point to have High Tea in every city we visit together. In San Francisco, we enjoyed high tea at the Palace Hotel, serving afternoon tea in the Garden Court since the early 1900’s.

We walked, and we walked and we walked…from the Four Seasons San Francisco to the Ferry Building Marketplace at the end of Market Street and continued through the Embarcadero. On our quest to find Lombard Street we ran into the Coit Tower and the Powell and Hyde Street Trolley Car station. After walking both up and down the famed most crooked street in the world, we began our journey back down the hills of North Beach, past the bocci ball playing men in Washington Square. From there we peeked into trinket shops lining Grant Avenue in Chinatown, and crossed through Union Square on our way back into the hotel.

That night, we had a delicious meal at MKT in the Four Seasons San Francisco. I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant after walking through the heavily scented aromas of North Beach and Chinatown, but was pleasantly surprised at the dining experience at MKT, especially with my daughter in tow.

The next morning, after re-fueling and sound sleep from all that walking and eating…we headed back to Chinatown for a Chinese tea experience in one of the little tea shops. A quick trip down Maiden Lane, then back to the Four Seasons to pick up our Cadillac ELR.

On our way to cross over the Golden Gate Bridge into Sonoma County we stopped at the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio.

During our visit, Off the Grid, a Food Truck rally was happening, along with a special exhibit of art work from the one and only Mary Blair of Small World, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan (to name a few) fame.

It was a glorious 24-hours. The right amount of to-dos in the right amount of time. A trip catered for my little girl that I will cherish forever.

As a contributor for TravelingMom.com and owner of RockStarMomLV.com, I was offered a media rate at the Four Seasons San Francisco and dinner at MKT. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Are you following me on Instagram? @RockStarMomLV to keep up with our life’s travel + lifestyle adventures.

Los Angeles. The name just sounds intimidating. The traffic. The freeways. The millions of people. Where do you stay? What do see? Where do you eat? These thoughts plague my mind every time I think about navigating my way through this monstrosity of a city. My daughter, however, is an aspiring actress, at least in her 8 year old mind. She wanted nothing more than to spend a day with mommy in none other than Los Angeles. Since we have friends who live there, we took advantage of their generous offer, and spent two nights with them so Stella and I could see the sights. Fortunately, we had been to L.A. a few times, like when we spent the day at American Girl Store at The Grove for her birthday. We had also done a beach day in Marina del Rey, and the Natural History Museum in Downtown Los Angeles, which made it a little easier to narrow down our choices. Hollywood was a non-negotiable, so we filled one complete day with a trek up and down Hollywood Boulevard.

Since we were traveling from Dana Point, California to Los Angeles, we agreed to leave in the morning with the goal to make it there by lunch. L.A. traffic can be unpredictable, and if caught in it during the wrong times, unbearable. Fortunately, when we left Orange County at 11am on a Saturday, we had a pretty uneventful ride straight into Hollywood. We arrived around noon, and had planned on having lunch at the trendy burger bar, 25° at the historic Roosevelt Hotel. Trendy and chic decor, with a sophisticated twist on the traditional burger, my daughter and I enjoyed every bite. Of course, she made me sit at the counter, which the bar stools were not the most comfortable. But, the food was yummy, and I loved how we sat with the windows open to Hollywood Boulevard, creating images in my mind from the early years when anyone who was anyone could be seen walking down the street to one of the premier theaters or restaurants. We had fun looking up historic facts about the Roosevelt Hotel, too, while waiting for a pretty delicious offering of pommes frittes and grilled cheese with three cheeses. Stella had a bruger the size of her head and served on a brioche bun, which is now my favorite way to indulge in these American classics. Oh, and the handmade shakes were pretty scrumptious as well!

25 degrees at the roosevelt hotel

After lunch, we wandered through the lobby of the Roosevelt Hotel. Built in 1926, and financed by a few Hollywood elitists, it was recently renovated in 2005. Vegas Fun Fact: the hotel renovation was overseen by Dodd Mitchell, the same man responsible for the design of Javier’s Mexican Cantina inside the Aria Las Vegas. The Roosevelt Hotel itself is known for its famous Hollywood clientele and parties thrown back in the glory days. The first Academy Awards was held at the Roosevelt. Marilyn Monroe was a resident at the beginning of her career, and it is said her ghost is seen and felt wandering the halls of the hotel. We didn’t get a chance to see the rooms or the infamous pool, but what we did see in the way of architecture and design was gorgeous. Colonial Spanish influences throughout made the hotel feel like I was entering a past era. Stella and I couldn’t get enough of the lobby.

roosevelt hotel wish you were here

We finally made the trek to the great outdoors- Hollywood Boulevard. A very sunny day in July, the sun felt even hotter and shined a little brighter that day. The sidewalks were jammed packed with people and their cameras, making sudden stops to get a quick snap of a celeb star on the Walk of Fame, footprints in front of the Chinese Theater, or the oddity that makes Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard. At first I was a bit unsure of whether or not my daughter was too young to be down there, but when I glanced over and noticed how she was taking it all in, I changed my mind. Like her mommy, she and I are enamored with the history of the places we travel to, and Hollywood is no exception. Just the main street feels so filled with ghosts and their stories that glamified the industry and kept us entertained infinitely.

One Day in Hollywood

– Parking: Parking is not cheap anywhere in L.A., and unless you have the patience, which I do not, to drive around and look for parking in ally ways, you will have to pay to park somewhere. We chose to valet at the Roosevelt Hotel and have lunch. There is no validation, and it cost us around $30 for 6 hours. There are public parking lots available, and some will offer validation for a few hours if you shop or dine at a particular establishment.

Hollywood Travel

– Lunch: We chose the Roosevelt Hotel because we had the historic and architecturally interesting property on our itinerary. There also happened to be a yummy burger bar, 25°, at the front of the hotel, so we made our day work around parking, hotel visit and lunch. The least amount of driving that needs to be done, the better. Plan on parking and walking for a few hours. It is one of my favorite ways to see the sites, and makes for a more enjoyable day with less stress.

One Day in Hollywood

– Site Seeing: Walking up and down Hollywood Boulevard is truly the best way to see it. We started out from the Roosevelt Hotel, and took advantage of the Walk of Fame right outside. Following that up one side of the street, crossing over, and following the stars up and down the opposite side, led us on a tour of some popular sites: TCL Chinese Theater (formerly Grauman’s Chinese Theater), Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, and the Dolby Theater (formerly Kodak Theater). Crossing back over to the Roosevelt Hotel side of Hollywood Boulevard is Disney’s El Capitan Theater and right next door is Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Theater tours can be arranged at some of the locations, with advanced notice and purchased tickets. I would highly recommend seeing a movie at the El Capitan Theater- it is an experience like no other.

We started our day, once we arrived into Los Angeles at noon, had lunch, did our site seeing and caught a flick at the El Capitan Theater, and left Hollywood at 6:30pm. The one big #fail of our day? We never saw the actual Hollywood sign but, “I can’t think about that right now. If I do, I’ll go crazy. I’ll think about that tomorrow.”

As a member of the media, I was given a special backstage tour of the El Capitan Theater, along with tickets to view the 3D show of Maleficent. All other adventures through Hollywood Land were curated and paid for on my own. All thoughts and words 100% belong to me.

Family Travel, Las Vegas, rockstarmom recommends

Looking for some air conditioned fun this summer with the family? I have recently checked out some very hot spots in Vegas. Here’s my list of top attractions for family summer fun in Las Vegas.

Please note, my family and I were guests of Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum Las Vegas, The High Roller Las Vegas and Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas. All words and thoughts are 100% my own.

1. Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum Las Vegas tops my list this summer. It is a place I have seen in major cities around the world, and one I never thought I would ever take the time to visit. I am glad I did. In my husband’s words, “It’s cooler than you think it is going to be,” and he is spot on. Start your journey through celeb-laiden rooms with a quick family pic in front of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” photo drop.  Each room is wild because the wax figures seem so real, it actually feels like you are mixing and mingling with some pretty fabulous peeps. The kids loved it because they could get up close and personal with some of their favorite stars, musicians and pro-athletes. And, it ‘s a very hands-on museum as props are available to make the experience even more real. If your kids are into Superheros, do not miss the 4-D Avengers show at the end of the tour. It is included in your ticket price, and is quite impressive. (This is a full sensory experience with 3-D glasses, and the sensation that you are really in the movie. I brought my 10, 8 and 3 year old twins who all loved it. My 6 year old nephew was freaked out and had to leave early. Obviously, trust your instinct with your kid’s personality on this one.) madametussauds.com/lasvegas (Read the whole review here.)

2. The High Roller Las Vegas is another great way to keep your family entertained and out of the sun. From the moment you enter the High Roller Lobby, you are transformed into a futuristic atmosphere filled with lively music, light shows and entertainment. Your Virtual Guide walks you through the experience while waiting to ride to the top. Stop at the bar before getting on, (non-alcoholic bevs available) and step into a pod built for approximately 30 guests. Your Virtual Guide meets you again once inside, and starts the count down to the top- an exhilarating 550 feet- where it becomes one big party with fun dance music and celebratory visuals of the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding valley. Book your ride close to sunset to get the ultimate experience of both day and night (can’t beat those desert summer sunsets). There are also great summer deals right now for both locals and visitors. One full ride around the wheel is about 30-minutes.   caesars.com/thelinq/high-roller (Read the whole review here.)

3. Sprinkles should be your next stop once off the High Roller. This legendary west coast cupcake bakery now has roots in Vegas. Located at The Linq, it is just a few steps off the High Roller. Day or night, Sprinkles will hit the spot. If you are unfamiliar with the tasty treats, I suggest trying the mini- cupcake first or the kid’s cone for ice cream. Each are priced at $2 and the perfect portion size to try something new. Line too long for a cupcake? Take a walk around the corner to the 24-hour Sprinkles Cupcake ATM. Swipe your card, make your cupcake selection, and it is magically delivered. Cut that puppy in fours and share with the group. sprinkles.comtop attractions for family summer fun in las vegas

4. Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas is still rocking the summer fun with exciting water slides and the brand new Tornado. If you ever wondered what it was like to ride in a real tornado, here’s your chance. The ride will drop your 4-person raft 36′ into a 110′ tunnel before entering the eye of the storm. It was a wild ride, and ultimately, our most favorite, actually tied with the Desert Racers. You can spend the day at Wet’n’Wild with either cabana rentals, covered lounge chair areas, or plenty of open space to park your brood. Or, do what we do…rent a locker, purchase an Express Band, and go from ride to ride in a matter of hours. No outside food or drink is allowed, but there is a park nearby with covered picnic benches for an hour of down time (just make sure to get your hand stamped for re-entry!). Also, check rider requirements on-line before heading out. There are a few like the Hoover Half Pipe where riders need to meet height and weight requirements in order to ride. Season Passes still available, along with Twilight Hours ticket specials. For more photos of Wet’nWild Las Vegas click here. wetnwildlasvegas.com

5. The Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay offers an impressive indoor aquarium for kids of every age. See ferocious piranhas, a Komodo Dragon, a rare Golden Crocodile, and the electrifying Jelly Fish tank. Ocean aficionados will love the Touch Pool, and all will be awed by the 1.3 million gallon tank with over 30 different kinds of sharks. All of this while also learning about the eco systems and necessity of keeping our oceans clean, conserving on land, and protecting the creatures within. My 3-year old twins loved our visit there, and cannot wait to go back. They were fascinated with the touch pool, the jelly fish tank, and of course, getting to see the sharks up close and personal. Nevada Residents with ID receive discounted tickets. Ages 4 and under are free. sharkreef.com

6. Discovery Children’s Museum Las Vegas creates a different experience no matter how many visits you make in a week, month or year. This summer Scholastic’s Magic School Bus Kicks Up a Storm, is the new traveling exhibit at the museum until September 1, 2014. Ms. Frizzle’s Classroom is transformed into a Weather Observatory where visitors can explore visitors can explore the water cycle and its relation to weather, and how influences from air, heat, water and land combine to create weather through these three interactive environments. Very hands on and lots to do, though each age will understand it differently. The twins were intrigued by the movement of air, while my 8 year old was more concerned about how it all worked. discoverykidslv.org

Thank you to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum Las Vegas, The High Roller Las Vegas, and Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas for the opportunity to experience these family friendly attractions in Las Vegas. I was asked to write a review in exchange for mine and my family’s passes. All opinions, however, are based on my personal experience and are honestly written.
