Get Present, Las Vegas, Stop, Woman Hit by UPS Truck

This week the people of Las Vegas and Henderson lost a well loved member of both the Catholic and Education communities to a tragic accident involving a UPS truck in her own neighborhood.  Albeit, it sounds like it was the text book definition of an accident, the poor woman was hit by an unsuspecting UPS driver who honestly did not see her.  However, it was most likely one that could have been avoided.

After hearing about this, I visited the 8 News Now links on FaceBook that were reporting the information to the general public.  I read the comments submitted by locals, and it got me thinking, regardless of who is at fault in this situation, I am going out on a limb and saying that we have all been guilty of negligent actions either being a pedestrian or a driver.

The world is just not the same as it was 50, 25 or even 15 years ago.  We have different distractions, different directions, different timetables.  Though we specifically need to be cautious of things like drug, alcohol and cell phone abuse while driving, most especially in our 24-hour town, there are new distractions to add to that list that are just as damaging and dangerous.

We drive bigger cars.  We are in a bigger rush to get places.  Spaces are smaller, and there’s more people living in them. And, let’s be honest, people seem to commute with a sense of entitlement.   I’m not here to offend anyone, again, I’m guilty of it, too.  Think about when you are cruising around in a parking lot.  Your time is way more valuable than anyone else’s and therefore, they all need to get out of your way!  You need that space more than the next guy.  Or how about the person who is backing out and doesn’t bother to look because they are convinced that they have the right away because they are backing out.  My favorite is in the school parking lots where people are more concerned about getting in and out of that zoo more so than they are about the kids who come running out between parked cars.  I, myself, have even bumper dinged a car in front of me as I was exiting the school because I was paying more attention to a bunch of little kids running through the lot trying to get to school on time.

Pedestrians are just as bad, if not worse.  Trying to talk on the phone or text while walking, sometimes holding bags and kids and strollers all at the same time.  I always remember my mother yelling at me when I was about 9 years old because I loved to read.  I would literally walk around with my nose stuck in a book.  One time, we were walking through a parking lot, her, trying to keep an eye on three kids, and I had my head burried in a book.  You cannot see a car coming if you are reading a book, or trying to answer a text.  I also love how pedestrians walk into the street or through the parking lot thinking people are going to stop for them.  Yes, pedestrians do have the right away, but one should never assume a car is going to stop.  We still need to utilize common sense. Especially with all the daily distractions people have going on in their own lives, you never can be sure that person is looking out for your safety.

I know we have all been there, either the guilty party or the one who is trying to avoid hitting people.  I just want to remind everyone to Stop the Madness. Get present to what is happening.  Be in the moment.  Pay attention.  Let your ego go.  It’s OK to let someone get in front of you, or to stop to let someone cross the street.  In fact, you’ll be a better citizen for it.  You’ll pay it forward and maybe start a trend.  We all need a little more presence in our life to feel some sense of control.  In a way, we are allowing all these distractions to take over and create chaos.  We need to reel it back in and remind each other to take care of each other.  A simple minute of being present to your surroundings helps to avoid senseless accidents that could easily be avoided.

I’ve committed to keeping my phone in my purse once I leave the house, and only to take it out if I am in a secure place where my distractions and actions are not going to harm myself or others.  I commit to being more present so I can be a good example for my children on how to be a concerned, cautious and caring citizen.

What are you committing to in order to keep our community a safer place to be, live and play?

Candy Schneider, Children's Books, Las Vegas, RockStarMom, The Smith Center

I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am about this post.  Over the summer, I had the opportunity (thanks to RockStarMommy, Ashley Massi) to meet with the VP of Education and Outreach for The Smith Center of the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, Candy Schneider.

Seriously, if you have any love for the arts, culture and education in our community, you should personally write her a thank you note.  For the past 25+ years, she has worked diligently in the Clark County School District, not only as an educator, but also as an advocate to enhance our children’s (as well as our own if you went to school here) education and future.  For those who scoff and say, “Vegas has no community.  There is little to no education efforts made by the school district to increase our schools’ involvement in arts and culture.” I beg to differ.  After listening to all Candy talk humbly about her accomplishments and introduction of programs into our school system, especially the lower income schools who rarely have these types of opportunites, I wanted to jump across the desk and hug her and cry at the same time.

After thanking her profusely for her commitment to our children, their education and their future, I asked her if she would submit a list of her Top 10 favorite children’s books to share with my RockStarMomLV readers.  When she was pulling them off her bookshelf without hesitating, I was impressed that I had not heard of more than half of them.  Since I wanted to know, I figured you would, too!  Being a dedicated educator, she couldn’t just give me 10, so she added a bonus one for your enjoyment!

Where Will The Smith Center for the Performing Arts Be Located?

Set on nearly five acres in downtown Las Vegas, The Smith Center will be at the heart of downtown’s new urban development Symphony Park.

The 4.75-acre Smith Center will be northeast of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, which is at the corner of Bonneville Avenue and Grand Central Parkway.

What Do the Plans Include?

The venues include the magnificent 2,050-seat Reynolds Hall, complete with stunning balconies, a dramatic stage and a full orchestra pit capable of seating up to 100 musicians; the 300-seat cabaret theater that overlooks Symphony Park and is ideal for jazz, cabaret and other performances best seen and heard in an intimate setting; and the 200-seat studio theater, ideal for rehearsals, children’s theater, community events and private social gathers.

The theaters have been meticulously designed to provide optimal sightlines and refined acoustics. As a result, performers and patrons will connect like never before. State-of-the-art recording equipment will preserve performances for the future, ensuring that they will continue to be enjoyed as digital masterpieces.

The Smith Center’s education facility, the Boman Pavilion, will also house offices, classrooms and additional multipurpose rooms suitable for workshops and presentations.

What is the Timeline?

The Smith Center broke ground in May 2009 and is projected to open in March 2012.

What Does it Look Like?

Inspired by many styles of architecture including Art Deco, The Smith Center will be constructed out of Indiana limestone and feature smooth masculine lines that are rich in detail. At 16 stories above it all will be an incredible bell tower that will house a four-octave carillon comprising 46 handcrafted bronze bells. The tower will be topped with a stainless steel silver crown.

What Kind of Performances Will Be Offered?

Designed to address the needs of community residents, The Smith Center will offer a blend of performances by local arts groups as well as first-run touring attractions. It will feature music, theater, and dance companies who celebrate cultures from all over the world. The Smith Center’s resident companies will include the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre.

What Kinds of Educational Programs Will Be Offered?

The Smith Center will stage many performances, workshops and master classes for students in Clark County. The Smith Center has joined with the Clark County School District and the Cultural Division of Clark County to participate in the John F. Kennedy Center Partners in Education Program. This partnership features national and international artists who conduct workshops for teachers and students, connecting the arts to all areas of the curriculum.

In the fall of 2009, The Smith Center became one of 16 regional programs in the country in cooperation with the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Virginia. This internationally recognized program enhances preschool education by training teachers how to incorporate creative music, theater and dance into their curricula. Southern Nevada Wolf Trap is in partnership with United Way of Southern Nevada Success By 6 and Citi in Nevada.

How Will The Smith Center Be Different Than Other Local Theaters?

Unlike many Las Vegas showrooms, The Smith Center will be a technical work of art with the latest advancements and amenities. It will accommodate the largest touring attractions, and yet be acoustically refined to showcase the finest soloists. It will be a stand-alone, family-friendly cultural arts center that will serve the needs of our community, local arts organizations, and our children.

Again, I urge you to please visit their Web site at www.thesmithcenter.com for more information.   And stop by the project downtown, it is AMAZING!  Last but not least buy your tickets!  Support this fabulous new facility we have as a part of our community.  I hope you are as excited as I am!
