Las Vegas, recipes

The mojito may be the ultimate summer cocktail, but poolside at the Four Seasons Las Vegas is the ultimate place to enjoy them. This summer take a seat at Press, the hotel’s new chic indoor/outdoor bar with a relaxing atmosphere which sometimes includes live music. Veranda offers patio seating overlooking the pool, shaded by lush landscaping. One of the most alluring attributes to both venues is the locally sourced and handcrafted cocktail program. Every summer boasts of a new must-have drink, made with ingredients found within 100 miles of the city of Las Vegas. This summer treats include Rumskey and Vodka from the local Las Vegas Distillery. Get a sneak peak below at some of the exciting new summer cocktails at Four Seasons Las Vegas this season.

Beauty, Las Vegas

Need your hair done? Gel manicure? Make-up application? Little Botox? Quick spray tan? (Is there anything quick about that?) I may have found the perfect spot for locals getting ready for a big night on the Strip. LOOK Style Society has got it all for you under one roof. Prices are reasonable, location is accessible, and most definitely a RockStarMom Recommends place to be.

LOOK Style Society Las Vegas product

The salon itself is well planned. You can thank local builders, Christopher Homes for the well thought out design and plenty of detail. LOOK Style Society is a revolutionary new concept in the world of beauty destinations. Located in Town Square Las Vegas, the ultra-chic environment features a fashion-forward array of beauty services and products. Here’s what you can expect to find at this all-inclusive destination:

  • Sam Villa’s HairShow Blowout Bar
  • A flagship essie Nail Lounge
  • The MedSpa by Dr. Orna Fisher, M.D.
  • Sunless Tanning by Chocolate Sun
  • Skin Spa
  • Makeup Lounge
  • A complete array of hair services from the city’s best stylists

Here’s what I loved about the LOOK Style Society:

  • The LOOK cafe with handcrafted coffees, high-end tea selections, SmartWater, and snacks set in a sweet coffee shop style area while you wait for your services
  • Exclusive top-rated beauty products available in The Beauty Boutique
  • Private VIP areas for bridal parties, birthday parties or just a fun Girls’ Day Out at the salon
  • Everything I need to primp all under one roof

While there, I had the chance to have my hair blown out by one of the stylists in the Sam Villa HairShow Blowout Bar. You don’t know Sam Villa? No worries. I was not familiar with him either until the stylist started to explain his affiliation with Redkin and the work they have created together for hair care products and styling tools.

All stylists are trained by Sam Villa, known as the “hairdressers’ hairdresser,” whose credentials include 30 years of teaching experience, winner of “Favorite Platform Artist/Educator” at the prestigious Stylist Choice Awards in 2007, 2011 and 2012, education artistic director for Redken 5th Avenue and chairman of his namesake digital education and styling tools company. All beauty professionals taught by Villa are known for speed, consistency and creative finishing services.

One example is the Texturizer, which I asked to be used in my style. A styling tool that looks similar to a crimping iron, and is used under the top of the hair and near the roots to give lift and texture. Love it! I also loved how the stylist would share techniques with me on how to get a salon professional look at home. Drying each piece carefully with a rolling brush, then taking that same piece, hand rolling it, and pinning it to my head while she went on to the next. By the time she finished, my hair had cooled, and had great body with a lasting curl.

Personally, I’ve never done a spray tan before, but I hear that if you are to do one, then the Sunless Tanning by Chocolate Sun is the way to go. All the products are natural and organic, which caught my attention right away. They are also said to not stain nor leave that funky after smell often associated with spray tans. I went straight from looking at spray tans to checking out the oola sunblock, both for me and my kids. LOOK Style Society carries both lines, and as far as organic sun care goes for your skin, this is the one I prefer for me and my children.

Do not forget to book your next main pedi at LOOK Style Society in the essie Nail Lounge. A flagship store that has every single color of essie ever known, as well as the wildly popular gelish options as well.

Finally, who can resist a VIP area set up just for you and some girlfriends. I found this amenity to be one of the most valuable, especially for those upcoming brides who want a personal, yet luxurious experience of getting primped for the big day. Bachelorette parties, bridal and baby showers, even birthday celebrations are welcome in this space. The beauty is that Town Square is minutes away from the big hotels on the Strip. Why bother with the fuss of a busy hotel salon when you can have local convenience and pricing?

Frolic, Las Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas had its fame and heyday back in the 1950’s and 60’s while the town was still growing. As the bustling town began to turn into a full blown city, by the late 1970’s, Downtown Las Vegas began to lose its luster. Just like in any major city, the downtown area in Las Vegas couldn’t keep up with the rapid growth, and quickly went from the scene to be seen, to lock your car doors, roll up the windows and drive without stopping. Unfortunately, I grew up with the later mentality. Sad, but true.

One of my first jobs back in Las Vegas was working for an advertising agency who represented Mayor Oscar Goodman’s campaign. One of his campaign promises to the City of Las Vegas was to begin revitalizing Downtown. One of my first projects with this agency was to work with the group, based out of California, on researching the facts for their efforts. Funny, at the time, I was low man on the totem pole, and to my boss, this was probably a “busy work” project for me. This was the overall sentiment of the community here- we didn’t think it would work, this revitalizing downtown. So, he threw a project at me to satisfy his client and keep me busy. For me, it was an opportunity to watch history in the making, and be involved in a very, teeny tiny, small way.

Oscar Goodman managed to gain the attention of  Zappos.com owner and CEO, Tony Hsieh. Tony already had a lively headquarters where he was running his on-line enterprise, based in Henderson. But, fortunately for us, he loved and embraced the idea of supporting the new growth of Downtown Las Vegas, bought the old city hall, and moved his team and company to the new location. Downtown Las Vegas was already becoming a mecca for local artists with First Fridays and the Arts Factory, but this move provided a major cornerstone in the building of an even stronger foundation for the Downtown Las Vegas community.

As a native, it has been fascinating to watch this transition of an area go from being strictly businesses, government, and folks down on their luck, living on the streets, to one of a thriving, new age utopia. Instead of tearing down buildings and putting up news ones, the Downtown Project is working to re-use the spaces already there. Abandoned motels have become artists colonies. Previous strip mall shops are now trendy eateries, bars and coffee shops. There is plans of one area becoming a community market with its own “living wall” to pick fresh herbs. Hotels that were once thought to have gone to the way-side, like the El Cortez and Gold Spike have become the cool place to stay. The Downtown Container Park is the ultimate venue in providing Hsieh’s dream of where people come to collaborate, collide, and create. People are living here. This downtown community is taking hold, and amazing things are happening for them, and for Las Vegas because of it.

If you are a Las Vegas local and haven’t ventured into the Downtown Las Vegas area, I highly recommend it. Start with a coffee at Chill Spot in the Downtown Container Park where coffee is roasted locally and and the beans are organically grown. Enjoy those first few sips while you window shop the locally owned boutiques and other eateries, or let the kids play in the Treehouse. Then cruise down Fremont Street and check out the changes being made on the daily to the buildings in that area. Artists murals created during the Life is Beautiful festival provide lively street scenes and provoke thought. Want to think like the hipsters? Pop into The Beat coffee house- maybe just in time for the Open Mic or a Vegas Tech open forum. The Historic 5th Street School has all kinds of community events happening at any given time. Lunch at eat. gets packed around 11:30, so be sure to be the first one there at 11. If you really want to see Downtown Las Vegas, then book a Trikke tour. The informative guides will give you a Downtown Las Vegas 101 eduction. Or, stay connected by visiting DowntownProject.com. The passion of the people living and working in Downtown Las Vegas is undeniable, and felt in every aspect of their work to keep making #DTLV a desirable place to just be.
