Food, recipes

Today’s post is sponsored by Macy’s and Martha Stewart through the Everywhere Society.

Let’s just call a spade a spade. I don’t bake. In fact, it terrifies me whenever my kids want home made cookies, cupcakes or cakes. I am the first person to call in the reinforcements, or just call the local bakery. A blogger colleague hit the nail on the head for me- baking has to be exact. There is no room for error. I need flexibility and a bit of creativity, which is why I am not a great baker. I can’t hide my mistakes. On the other hand, I love to think that one of these days I will get it right, and my friend Martha Stewart will walk me right through how to make a perfect torte or a splendidly, moist two-layer chocolate cake like I am an old pro. If that doesn’t work out, then at least I have the pretty pictures to wish upon.

The latest recipe book to join the Martha Stewart Living collection is Martha Stewart’s Cakes. Her first-ever book of bundts, loaves, layers, coffee cakes and more is beautifully designed and photographed. The cakes almost pop off the pages and onto my cake plate. I actually really wish they would. The recipes are inspiring asking for ingredients like butter, chocolate, egg whites and ginger making me want to try every single one of them. There are even a few recipes adapted for vegan diets.

The first ice-box cake I ever had was made by my sister-in-law. I never knew what one was before. There is an entire chapter dedicated to them in Martha Stewart’s Cakes book. They look so good and not too challenging. Look at how yummy this Mint Chocolate Chip Cake looks.

Last week I was invited to meet Martha Stewart at the Macy’s Home Store in Las Vegas. I was sent a copy of her new Cakes book, and had the opportunity to have Martha sign my copy. She was quite pleasant, asking what I blogged about and how my day was going. She also mentioned that she enjoys Vegas- which is always nice to hear. Her elegant signature was done effortlessly and in the same amount of time I sign off on all my kid’s homework. I have to admit, it was pretty cool to experience. I mean, who hasn’t pined over her perfectly decorated wedding cakes in the past? Or brought a picture of the perfect baby shower cake to your local baker carefully scored from right out of her magazine? She’s the face that launched the DYI revolution. How could I not be excited to meet her!

Slendertone First Review

Today’s post is sponsored by Slendertone Abs Belt, and is part of the Thoughts on 39 series.

It has been about 3 weeks into my experimentation with the Slendertone Abs Belt. My review is to be a comprehensive discovery at the end of 6 weeks, so seeing as I am about halfway there, I wanted to check-in with my findings so far. Around the same time I started using the Slendertone Abs Belt, I had my beginning of the year physical, in which I was wearing my winter weight. Since then, along with regular exercise of 60-minutes of cardio 4-5 times a week, and some weight training, I have lost 4lbs. I attribute this to my new found daily regimen of warm water and fresh squeezed, organic lemon juice, followed by organic, black coffee, a healthy, clean and sensible breakfast, lunch and dinner, with my normal vitamins and supplements, followed by 2 Teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar at night. I have also been very conscientious about the amount of prepared food and alcohol I’ve been consuming, often replacing packaged foods with a fresh juice and my nightly glass of red with a cuppa ginger tea and local honey. With all of that being said, I do not believe the Slendertone has played a significant role or, honestly, any part, in my weight loss.

Now, because I have lost that 4lbs, which doesn’t really seem or sound like a ton, for me personally, it is enough to know if the Slendertone is working. Prior to that little bit of weight loss, when I pushed on my stomach muscles, my fingers went straight into a gushy nowhere. Nothing even stopped them from digging right into my gut. Having been a cheerleader, dancer and tennis player for a good portion of my youth, continuing with tennis, running and yoga in my adulthood, this feeling is so disappointing. No matter the amounts of sit ups, crunches, bicycle kicks I was doing, my abs never felt tight or tighter. After having used the Slendertone for these past three weeks, I can actually feel the sides of my abs and middle of my stomach push back when I apply force. That actually made me feel pretty good about what was happening here.

A reader had asked how I felt about the Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) and any possible side effects. After some research, the most I could come up with were things like superficial issues like bruises and burns from the gel pads. Of course, if not used properly, shock or electrocution, and some interference with other medical electronic devices like pacemakers. This type of equipment has been used with Russian athletes since the 1970’s, though the US did not really approve of the use of EMS until much later, until more conclusive research and results were founded. I am of the belief that nothing is a miracle or magic. You have to work at it if you want it, but if there is something that will jump start my efforts or support my efforts by providing maintenance or enhancing them, I’ll give it a shot. Here are some of my discoveries:

Best use for the Slendertone is exactly at mid-section. My initial thoughts on using this was to help strengthen my lower abs, so I tried to wear the belt around the lower section of my torso. Though it worked, it was challenging to get the perfect spot where both sides and middle were being worked evenly. Once I moved the belt to the upper portion of my mid-section, the Slendertone seemed to function at a much better capacity.

Work the intensity of the EMS. At first I followed the recommended levels for beginners, but I felt absolutely nothing. As I increased the intensity, I realized I could handle way more than what was being suggested. Also, the instruction manual, though text and drawing heavy, was not especially clear to me on how to manage the intensity of the belt. I figured out that I needed to push both sides of the controller, not just one, to manipulate it for the perfect level.

Drawbacks of use. I found small things like making sure the belt was secure and tight enough and ensuring the intensity is at the exact right level was necessary for the Slendertone to work properly. There is mention of weird vibration in the manual, which is true when the intensity is too high and the belt not placed properly. My biggest complaint is just being able to identify this with every use took up a good 5-10 minutes of my time having to take the belt off, adjust, turn up the EMS, pause, take belt off, etc. This became a bit tedious to me making the effort to wear the belt more work than its worth.

Moving into the last few weeks of my trial, I will share my overall results as far as inches lost around the middle, and what level and time I worked my way up to. At this point, I’m pleased with my usage of the Slendertone Ab Belt. Looking forward to the final results.

Thank you Slendertone Abs Belt for sponsoring today’s post.

thoughts on 39

January is the month of cleansing for me. It seems to be the time where I remove, let go, wipe the slate clean so I can start over again for the New Year. Many people take the last few weeks of the year before to start contemplating their last year, how it all went down and plans for the new year, with written resolutions by the 1st to boot. Me- I can hardly find a time to breathe, let alone sleep and eat once Halloween makes it’s annual appearance. I do contemplate and consider, then my husband and I have our annual first of the year dinner where we chat about goals and stuff. This year was different. At first I couldn’t place it. I was feeling unfocused, had too many thoughts going through my head, and couldn’t understand why I wasn’t able to set some goals- any goals. Finally, it dawned on me, that beyond the abnormal amount of craziness during the holidays, we had moved our family of 6 for the 2nd time in 2 years, celebrated my dad’s 60th birthday, my cousin’s wedding, and New Year’s celebrations- I was exhausted. Distracted. My mind was fried. And, I was turning 39 this year.

I needed to get back to me. In order to do that, there was a lot of work that needed to be done first. Most importantly, I needed to start cleansing. I had to let go of a lot of physical, mental and emotional things that were holding me back- keeping me stuck in my past. Some of these things were making me question my worth, my positioning, my importance in the world, to my family and friends, and to myself. Sometimes I forget who I really am, or who I was or what I stood for. Sometimes, being a mom of 4 and a wife, makes me forget about what I wanted out of life and what I had already accomplished. Driving one day, I started thinking to myself about all the positive things I have done. As I do, I was justifying all that I have done and all I have accomplished to that point. Not even so much what I had accomplished, but I was proud of. What I would want my children to know about me. It started to give me the courage and the confidence to know if I did these things, how could I not accomplish the rest of my life’s goals? Then I thought, if I can name off 20 things, can I name of 50? What about 100? I mean, I am 38 after all, which means I would only have to find 2.6 accomplishments or proud moments from every year of my life. OK, maybe a tad impossible, but even if I just went back to 18 years old, that’s 5 a year. I accepted my challenge.

This list is more like a stream of consciousness. It’s not necessarily in any order, just random thoughts I put down as they came to me. I’m also totally struggling with publishing this piece. Not only because it is all about me. But because it’s driving me nuts there are typos and grammatical errors. Understand, I had to create each section in a photo editing site. I really don’t want to go back and recreate all this text. I appreciate your blind eye to the errors, and here we go….

Thank you for joining me in this somewhat narcissistic post, if you made it this far. I wanted to do this as sort of an autobiography of me for my kids. As I was writing this, my son came over and started reading some of this and was impressed. He started asking me questions, and was intrigued. How could he possibly know his mother, like really know his mother, in the 9 years that we have known each other. I have to admit, it felt kind of nice to have him interested in me and some of things I had done. Mission Completion.

OK, now you. Take some time to jot down some of the stuff you are really proud of. Revisit the stuff you wince at when you go down memory lane. Embrace it. Then let it go. Hold on to the good stuff. Learn from the ugly. Move onto the next chapter of your life. What are your thoughts on 39?
