Hugh, Namesakes

I imagine the holidays are harder for everyone who has lost someone dear to them.  You still find ways to manage, but it definitely pulls at your heartstrings a bit.  My family lost our grandpa almost 2 years ago, and though I wasn’t bursting into spontaneous tears like last year, there were still times when certain things brought me right back to when he was around, and a few times where I actually had to remind myself that he wouldn’t be apart of our Christmas festivities this year.  Or, so I thought.

I’ve told this story a thousand time before, but we found out about the twins the day my grandfather passed away.  I was 9 weeks pregnant, and though we had no idea what the sex was, I said to my husband, “If there is a boy in there, I would like to name him, Hugh.”  I always wanted to name one of my son’s, Hugh, way before I was even married or having kids.  My grandfather said to me, “Nah.  Don’t ever name your kid Hugh.  It’s a horrible name.”  But, I always disagreed.  He was the only grandpa I had.  My father’s dad passed away when he was young, so did his mother, in fact, my mom’s parents were the only grandparents my siblings and I ever knew.  So, they are like way super special to us.  Because of that, I knew I wanted to name my son, Hugh.

When he passed, I was so upset, obviously for many reasons, but the main one was that he didn’t have the chance to meet my babies.  There are so many times when the boys do something funny that I say to myself, “My grandpa would have loved to have seen these guys!”  I also thought, I should have named my first son, Hugh, so he would have been witness to the name being passed through the generations.  But, he wasn’t.  I think there was a reason for that.

When we found out the babies were boys, I knew right away I wanted to name Baby B, Hugh.  It just seemed ironic to me that the day we found out about the twins, was the same day my grandfather passed away.  Embarrassingly, I really don’t know that much about twins.  What I do know is that Baby A is the first baby out, which lead me to believe, right or wrong, that he was also the first one in there.  I found it ironic that the day my grandfather passed away was the same day we found out about Baby B.  We knew I was pregnant with one, but it was almost as if he gave Baby B a high-five on his way in as my grandfather was heading on his way out.  And, I couldn’t help but feel this pull to Baby B as being somewhat representative of him.  After lots of consideration, I asked my family if they would be OK with me naming the baby, Hugh, and using it as his name.  (We call all our boys by their middle name…hubby’s family tradition.)  I was worried hearing the name would be too fresh for a wound that hadn’t healed yet.  We are such a close family and my grandfather was truly a patriarch.  I didn’t want my grandmother to be upset every time we said the baby’s name.  I was also concerned that he would always be compared to my grandfather because of his name.  It took a while to get past this.  In fact, I realized on Christmas this year, that I still had not fully associated my baby with his name as being his own.  Leading up to the big day, I would think about my grandfather when I saw his Christmas tree all lit up, or the decorations he specifically bought my kids to put outside.  He loved to decorate for the Holidays….any holiday!  I always listen to the Big Band and Swinging 60’s Christmas music because it reminds me of him, and my own youth, at Christmas.  I thought about him walking in the door at my new house to have a mimosa and breakfast on Christmas morning, with a big cheery, “Merry Christmas!” and anxious to see all the kids.   Up until today, I would hear my son’s name and think, man, I am still not embracing this as my baby’s name yet.  It still belongs to my grandfather.  But, this time, as I was watching my kids eagerly open their presents, with Christmas music playing in the background, my grandmother and parents walking in the house for breakfast, someone yelled out, “Hughie!”, and there was this calm in me.  I looked at my baby boy for the first time, and said, “Yup.  Hughie.”, as if I made peace with it all at that moment.  I was so grateful that I named him Hugh.  That my grandfather’s memory lives on, everyday of our lives because we are always reminded of him when we hear or say my son’s name.  It really is a beautiful thing.

And, just like my grandfather, my little Hughie is musically inclined.  He loves to sing and dance.  If you put a football and a piano in front of both boys, Harrison will go straight for the football, while Hughie is already singing and dancing while playing a tune on the piano.  That was so my grandfather.  Always wanting to be apart of the party.  Baby Hughie’s personality is just like my grandfather, laid back, go with the flow.  While Harrison is the mouth piece, the go-getter of the two.  And, in true form of the original Hugh, baby Hugh loves to eat.  And he eats with such gusto.  Banging his hand down on the highchair tray.  Doing the “happy dance” when we give him something he likes.  And shovelling every bite into his mouth before someone else tries to take it from him.  We were always yelling at my grandpa to slow down when he ate, and oddly, I find myself doing the same with this Hugh.

Timing is everything.  That saying really applies here.  I could have easily named my first son, Hugh, and though the sentiment would have been there, his personality is so different than my grandfather’s.  Not that they have to match, but it’s nice to know that when you name someone after somebody it truly does complement them.  Though he is no longer with us, physically, it’s like he’s here with us through little Hughie.  When he sings, dances, eats…when we call his name, and see it in writing.  I thanked my husband so many times for being agreeable to the name.  It was one of the best gifts my husband has ever given me.

Disney Champions For Kids | Part 2

Champion For Kids, Collective Bias, Disney, Wal-Mart

Last week, I spoke about my involvement with the Disney Champion for Kids campaign where I was to select a child deserving of a Christmas stocking filled with Disney themed items.  We started out with the intention to purchase items for two children at a local elementary school which has a large population of families who are in need.  A local realtor friend approached us and asked if we would help him provide for a family whose sole support for 7 children was from the mother, a single parent.  We decided as a family that all 7 children needed our help, and therefore, created a stocking for two of the children close in age to my oldest (7 and 4 years old), then purchased essential items like toothbrushes, shampoo, hats, gloves and blankets for the rest of the family, along with some fun Disney themed toys and trinkets for under the tree.

We found out the ages, sizes and needs of the kids.  I knew what was important to provide a family who needed everything, especially with small children.  I found myself having a hard time determining where to stop as I wanted to provide them with everything.  But, we set a budget and I had to be realistic.  I also remembered that other families were helping out, so that made it easier to be satisfied with our purchases.  I brought my two older kids and my mother-in-law to help shop for the family.
We are huge Disney fans at our house, so it we were very excited to discover stocking stuffers for the Disney Champion for Kids project at Wal-Mart.  From Disney brand clothing items like sweatshirts, t-shirts, underwear, hats, gloves and scarves to all kind of toys, movies, games and books, we have it all!  The better question would be what doesn’t our family love and use that’s a Disney product.  My twins were gifted the Rockin’ Mickey for Christmas and they love it! My kids also use the Listerine Phineas and Ferb mouthwash, the Oral B toothpaste and toothbrushes (Princesses and Cars of course!), and my daughter’s room is adorned with the Disney Princesses and Fairies collections on just about anything you can imagine.
The Wal-Mart closest to me is especially crowded, and things are constantly being moved around, so I don’t feel confident walking into the store as I know it’s going to take me awhile to get my bearings.  I also find the parking lot intimidating because it’s not easy to park, you seriously have to be there before the doors open to get a spot anywhere near the store.  It is also uncomfortable walking through the parking lot, especially when alone or with my kids because there are often many solicitors asking for money, and they are not afraid to approach you while getting into your car.  It is one of the reasons I do not shop there at times because I don’t want to be approached with my children.  I would like to see more efforts on Wal-Mart’s part to make the parking lot a little more user friendly in this way, where their customers feel secure walking from their car to the store.
Customer Service though is great.  Any time I’ve ever needed anything, I’ve always been greeted by kind, knowledgeable team members who make sure I find what I am looking for, help me right away, or go the extra mile to make my experience a good one.  Prices on items are easily found, and I really like the variety and uniqueness Wal-Mart has to offer shoppers.  Every time I come home with a cool gadget from there, my friends ask me where I got it.  If I’m looking for something a little off the wall or something I know would exist but not easy to find, I always check Wal-Mart.  I never have a problem with Customer Service or the checkout lines at my store’s location.  The checkers are knowledgeable, friendly and have a sense of urgency.  Especially around the holidays, I found they were quick to help out, locate items right away and answer any questions I had.
With four kids of my own, whenever I get the chance to grocery shop I take it!  I picked up some Horizon Organic Whole Milk, along with the Let’s Rock Elmo toy that was on sale right before Christmas, for my twins.  My older kids picked out the Gyro Bowls to give to the babies for Christmas presents.  We also bought additional non-Disney items for the family like Equate soap, lotion and mouthwash.  We bought extra toothbrushes, tooth paste and dental floss for the kids, along with Suave brand shampoo.  In addition, we purchased a Christmas themed flannel blanket, a pair of gloves and a hat, two bags of socks and some underwear for each child.
We were not able to deliver the stockings in person, but our friend picked up all the items, including the stockings, and brought them to the family.  My son was very concerned about the baby having everything he needed, so we also gave the mother a gift card for Wal-Mart to use on necessary baby items.  Along with the items we purchased, we also went through our drawers and donated any clothes, blankets, hats, gloves and toys we were no longer using.  Our friend reported the family was very grateful and the children were ecstatic to have some Christmas items.  Especially the little girls who received the Tiana and Belle dolls from us.  My two children wanted to write them cards, and made one for each child.  I think the experience was win/win for everyone involved. My kids still talk about the family and the baby.  Our friend has made it his mission to continue to give to the family throughout the year, and we plan to provide him with items that would be useful for them.  Working on this together really opened my kids’ eyes, who never want for anything, and helped them realize  there are many families in our own city, struggling to provide their kids with food, clothing and shelter.  Showing my children the photo of the family made it even more real for them.

Places to rock in Vegas with or without your little entourage. ©

It might not be the Rockefeller Center rink as we so often associate with ice skating in the city, but when you are in Las Vegas, it’s the next best thing.

My kids have been begging my husband and I to take them ice skating all winter long.  With school being out for break, and my husband having a rare Monday with the kids, we decided to go for it the day after Christmas.  We weren’t totally sure where to go as none of us are pros, and my kids had never been on a rink before.  After a quick call to the Info Desk at the Monte Lago Village Resort, where the rink is actually affiliated with, I felt confident we could do this.  We bundelled up in our cutest ice skating clothes, and away we went.

Traffic getting out to Lake Las Vegas was a breeze.  It took us tops 20 minutes from our house to the valet at the Ravella Resort at Lake Las Vegas.  We like to park here because we are familiar with the grounds, but the Monte Lago Village Resort also offers convenient parking.  The economy has not missed the Lake Las Vegas Resort, which is so sad.  The beautiful green golf course that once greeted visitors entering the master planned community, is now dead and brown, though still well kept.  Houses are still beautiful, and the Village is just as before…windy cobble stone roads and Italian stuccoed buildings that beacon much more lively times.  There were a few shops still open available for hot chocolate, gelato, and coffee.  And, it appeared as though some of the retail shops were open as well.

We headed on down to the Floating Rink.  At the ticket and rental station, you get a pair of skates and a wrist band allowing you all day access.  Adults skate for $15 and children for $12.  The rink itself does float, but contrary to what I thought, it’s actually attached to the dock, so there is no boat ride out to the middle of the lake.  Which is convenient, although, that might be a cool idea! It is also made from real ice, so it is thick and your skates can actually dig in.  Because it is located right above the water, there is some condensation created and the rink experiences melted ice from time to time.  Especially with the weather not being actual “ice skating” temperatures, there tends to be some slush and water on the rink.  This was a bit challenging as my kids were having a great time on the ice, but of course, as I’m yelling, “Stay away from the water,” they, my son especially, are skating right through it, falling down and getting their clothes soaking wet.  It doesn’t seem either that they are doing regular Zamboni circuits on the ice, the rink is rather small, but the surface seemed to be just enough for everyone to enjoy their skating for the day.

I have to admit, I haven’t skated in years.  I put on a pair of roller skates the other day and almost broke my neck, so I was a little nervous about putting skates with blades on the bottom and gliding over ice.  My kids were excited, but nervous as well.  they had never skated before.  The nice thing is that the rink is small, so you feel like you are in a more controlled environment.  There are also large traffic cones on the ice, which is great for the kids.  My son grabbed one and though he could hardly keep his ankles up and feet paralleled, he managed to still race around the rink for an hour and have a great time.  My daughter, on the other hand, absolutely refused the cone.  She was going to do this on her own, and by golly, she did.  Spunky, little headstrong creature who refused to have any help.  By the time we were ready to go, she was already working on her figure 8s and trying to skate as fast as she could.  She kept telling me, “I got this,” every time I would offer her a cone to hold on to.  I even had a good time.  It was a great release from all the stress and bustle of the Holidays to just go out with the kids, get some fresh air, a little movement and just have fun.  Brought me back to being a teenager ice skating with my friends, and I had a blast watching my kids have a great time on the rink.

I was barely able to pull them away by offering to buy them a chocolate from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, with promises of bringing them back again before the rink closes at the end of January.  My daughter didn’t want to leave…I think we may have found her talent.  I wish their was an ice skating rink closer to Henderson because I would take her all the time.

The Famous Floating Rink at Lake Las Vegas is open through January 29th.  Bring extra clothes for kiddos who may fall a lot and get wet, and don’t forget your camera!  We brought gloves and hats and heavy sweatshirts and the kids did just fine.  In fact, once they warmed up, they started to take off the hat and gloves.

Get outside with your family (or with friends or a date!) and enjoy the Ice Skating on the Lake.  And, support the beautifully master planned Lake Las Vegas.
