Holiday Travel Made Easier

I have been waiting years for this plan of mine to take affect. It has finally come, and I am so excited! Since my husband and I began dating seriously, like considering marriage and kids, we talked about doing less with the big lead up to Christmas and Santa and a 1,000 presents under the tree, and more about creating strong family traditions. We both enjoy traveling, and decided that creating the tradition of holiday travel would be much more sentimental and enjoyable for our family. It seemed like it was never going to happen- either we both were working full time, or starting new jobs, or having another baby. We would take smaller, closer trips like to Williams, Arizona for the Polar Express, or Telluride, Colorado for a wintery get-away, even Disneyland for a magical holiday. No matter how wonderful and important those trips were and are to us, we both yearned for something filled with more adventure. Something in a city we hadn’t experienced together. Something that we had to take a plane to get to. Now that our big kids are older, and they’ve made the journey twice now across the country, we felt ready to take on the one Holiday travel dream we have had for years now…New York City.

In a few weeks, we will hop on a flight to meet up with my husband in Washington, D.C., then all together head out to the Big Apple, and we have a full itinerary!

We will be staying at the beautiful Trump International Hotel and Tower in Central Park.

Seeing not to miss shows like the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular and the Broadway production of Annie.

Dining at fabulous restaurants such as Sarabeth’s and Balthazar’s.

And, of course, who can miss ice skating at Central Park, the lights and excitement of Times Square, Toys R Us and the American Girl Store…not my kids!

Ice Skating at Lake Las Vegas last year was good practice for our Central Park!

So, how do I keep all this together? A trip of this magnitude is not the same as planning a 3-hour road trip, or overnight stay in Moab on the way to Telluride. Of course, those trips take expert planning as well, but this kind of planning is different.  There are several plane flights involved, check-in times, dinner reservations, show tickets, and site seeing to plan. Even with a smart phone, it is quite challenging to keep all these things together in an organized fashion. I asked around to my trusted travel writing peers for an amazing app that will allow me to keep everything in one place. My iCalendar just wasn’t going to cut it. I needed more detail in my itinerary and wanted something I could share easily with my husband, parents and friends and family in New York so they could meet up with us. Guess what? There is an app for that!

With overwhelming response, TripIt seemed to be the main contender. With the ability to download the app onto my iPhone, as well as log in from my desktop, I went for it. When logging into my account from the website, it asks if I would like to sync with any emails related to my trip. Why, yes! And with a simple click of the button, TripIt scoured my gmail account for trips pertaining to Washington, DC or New York City, and automatically updated my on-line itinerary.

I could also go back in and manually add items as well. I can also include people from my address book on my itinerary, like my mother who is watching our twins, and my husband’s secretary so she can fill in his schedule at work. What I also love about this app, so far, is the ability to add the phone numbers, contact names, confirmation numbers, addresses and cross streets and it connects to my Maps app. How conveniently cool is that?

Finding this app seems to have made a world of difference in planning a full itinerary with a large family, as well as keeping those who need to know up to date on our frolics in case they need to get in touch with us. Nothing makes a trip more successful than feeling confident in our whereabouts, and knowing especially when we leave little ones at home, that we are easy to reach.

Surviving Holiday Travel

In a few weeks I will be heading back East with my husband and my two older kids. Still afraid to fly with the twins; it’s a goal for 2013. Even without the babies, I still get a bit nervous about flying across the country with my 8 and 6 year old in fear that they will all of a sudden get bored, start monkeying around, irritate the folks around us, and we will have to make an emergency landing in Des Moines, Iowa to drop their rowdy keisters off. Ya, that’s right, I said, “keisters”.

In addition to planning our wardrobe and itinerary, I also have to put into consideration how I’m going to keep these little guys entertained. I have to tell you, a lot of thinking went into this plan.

A.) Find the most direct flight as possible, or one that has the shortest lay over.

B.) Fly during the day- even though I would love to catch a Red-Eye to have more hours in my trip, the reality is that my daughter is quite cranky if she doesn’t get her beauty rest. I would rather wake her up early for an all day flight vs. picking her up from school and heading to the airport. This way I know she will get at least 8 hours in a bed well rested.

C.) Find an airline that provides the most amenities with the least amount of cost.

D.) Fill up a bag for each kid with plenty to keep them busy.

Given our route- fly into Washington, DC and out of New York City- the best option from Vegas to DC was through Southwest Airlines. I’m OK with that because the last trip we took to Orlando, Florida, we flew on the new Boeing 737-800. Though a bit of a squeeze and some adjustment, they have that “new plane smell” and are quite ergonomic. We will only have one stop with enough time to transfer to our next flight into Washington, DC. My only hope is that this time the WiFi is in affect.

tips for traveling with kids

Our flight home will be on JetBlue, which I am super excited about. It is a direct flight from New York to Las Vegas. We even, ahem, upgraded to the Even More class which will provide us with Early Boarding, Early Access to Overhead and More Leg Room in our seats. The best part? My kids will be fully entertained with the 36 channels of DirectTV, complimentary drinks and “blue” snacks. Mommy loves the in-flight WiFi and the First Bag Flies Free amenities.

Both Southwest and JetBlue offered the best flights at the best prices for the times we needed to travel. I also trust Southwest as an efficient and effective airlines. JetBlue I have only flown once, and enjoyed, but my decision most recently comes from the opinions of my friends and trusted fellow travelers.

Now for the in-flight entertainment:

Step 1: This I know from being a mother of 4- always pack a bag of new items. The new items are interesting and consume some time to explore, figure out, have fun with. I have hit up the Target $1 bin a few times in the last few weeks scouring the bins for travel games, airplane friendly crafts and coloring/activity books. Success! Found great gadgets and will keep them hidden until we get on the plane and they open their bag of tricks!

Step 2: Download new movies, games and apps to their iTouch, iPad or similar device. Of course, something they have been waiting to see or to come out on DVD always makes you Mother of the Year when they discover you have uploaded it for them.

Step 3: Keeping it organized. I don’t know about you, but it drives me absolutely batty when my daughter packs her own bag full of trinkets and toys to travel with. Organization is a key ingredient to a successful trip. I can’t stand the thought of having to dig blindly through my kids’ backpacks to try and find something I strategically placed in there so they wouldn’t have to dig and find. This is where I have been now introduced to the Lay n’Go. It looks so amazing, I may want one for myself! Not only does it create a space for your child to play, but it also takes the dreaded “clean up” time away, too. Just place in the bag, unfold the bag to play, then cinch the bag back up! It just sounds to simple to not have one.

Target Dollar Bin

After hitting up the Dollar Bin at Target and ransacking through to find the items most acceptable for a 6-hour plane flight, I was left with a plethora of goodies that more than likely to end up on the bottom of a back pack. In close quarters, it’s not easy to dig mid-flight for said items. Here is where the Lay n’Go comes in handy. I am sure, or hoping at least, that like most six year olds, my daughter is a hoarder. She collects and saves and fills bags like no other. I’m always surprised at the amount of stuff she has to fill in the numerous bags she continues to find in her bedroom. So, when I was asked to review this product to help not only with travel sanity- I figured it wouldn’t hurt to keep in mind for every day room organization as well.

I have to admit I was a bit pessimistic the contents I had in mind were going to fit the Lay n’Go Lite that was sent to me, but I’m an overachiever so I tried anyway. Lo and behold…it worked!

lay n go

I love that I can put these items in one place, cinch it up, throw it in her back pack and confidently say we will find it first time out. I also love the little pockets on the inside and outside to hold tinier pieces, like crayons, jewelry beads, doll accessories, etc., since I know this Lay n’Go Lite will be used for other items when we get back. In fact, I was so impressed, I ordred an additional one for my son to keep his items like this in his own travel bag.

Super excited to mention that this Lay n’Go comes in several sizes- perfect for legos, building blocks, dolls, tea parties…whatever! Just lay out the mat, place and play with the items on top of the mat, then when all done, cinch and go! Kind of a cool little concept. There is also ones for moms that looks great for traveling with your make-up and brushes! LOVE that idea!

The Lay n’Go is such a cool little gadget, I want to share it with you! Perfect time for Holiday travel, this 18″ play mat that cinches up into a carry sack, is sure to keep your trinkets organized. That’s the last thing you need is to have to find the distraction mechinisms. Enter the RaffleCopter below to win your Lay n’Go Lite. You can also enter a chance to win in their FaceBook sweepstakes going on now! (It ends December 15th and is worth over $200.)

Travel Entertainment for Kids | Frolic

OK! The vacation has been booked. Itinerary confirmed! And, kids have been told! (See our fun video below on how we surprised the kiddos about our trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.) My daughter has been frantically asking me about how long we will be on the airplane for. Though she has flown cross country, she still gets nervous about the “In-Flight Entertainment,” and frankly, so do I. From experience, I have learned to have the older kids (once they reach 4 or 5 years old) to pack their own Entertainment Bag (with guidance, of course). My biggest fear is that from 35,000 feet up, stuck in a cabin, they are gonna get bored and people are gonna get annoyed. So, I also pack extra things in my own bag…new toys, travel games, fun snacks, things they are not expecting so the flight goes a little easier.

But just in case in your stuck, I found some additional resources from some real Travel Pros!

APPS for your SmartPhone– I researched and found some pretty cool Free Las Vegas Apps that would be beneficial if you are traveling to Las Vegas this summer, and wrote about it on the TravelingMom website, which is a great resource for all your family traveling needs. I also came across these fun drawing apps, iLuvDrawing*. They were created by a mom with young children in mind. there are three to choose from, Draw Animals, Draw Monsters or Draw People, and are available in the iTunes store from $.99 – $2.99 depending on which device you download them to. My daughter loved the Draw People while my son loves the Draw Animals. If your kids are into creating and artsy apps, then I would suggest biting the bullet and purchasing at least one to try out. It kept my kids pretty busy, and the end result is that they will be able to take their learnings from the app and apply it to an actual paper drawing. There is a sweet voice that walks the kids through the instructions as well, so it’s something they will remember while drawing on their own.

The running joke in our family is that Mom makes the kids do “Stations” all through the summer. One day, they’ll thank me, I’m sure of it, but for now, I have to find ways to keep it interesting. By the way, my Stations are mobile, so it doesn’t matter where we are in the world, the kids still have to practice their lessons. As these TravelingMoms point out though, there is still plenty to be learned during your summer escapades.

I love what Connie Roberts, Disabled Traveling Mom, writes about how to incorporate education into your summer travels through language, culture and more. For those taking a road trip and want your kids to still  read, check out Audio Books for Your Kids, by Traveling Mom, Elizabeth Rodgers.

Do you have any great tips for traveling with kids? Would love to hear them!

*iLuv Drawing provided me the codes to download and try the iLuvDrawing People, Monsters and Animals. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.
