Surviving Summer Travel

Tags

As much as I love the romantic vision of not having to get kids to bed, wake up, lunches made, homework done and off to school on-time routine in the morning, the reality is that it just adds another notch in my stress level of how I’m going to keep 4 kids entertained all summer without losing my sanity! Summer camp sign-ups are complete- yes, even the twinners are going, don’t judge. We’ve planned our stay down in Dana Point. I’ve ordered the water toys for the backyard. All that’s left is to get our actual planned vacation confirmed and organized. Vacation, you say? Why, yes. If you did not know much about me, you should know this. I LOVE TO TRAVEL. And, I’ve decided that even having 4 kids is not going to slow me down. Now it’s all a matter of learning how to do it with 4 kids!

First thing’s first, though…we have travelled pretty extensively with the twins, enduring several road trips with them as infants to Williams, AZ for Polar Express, Telluride, CO for 4th of July, and several times back and forth to Dana Point and Disney, we also know when too much is too much. Like trying to put all 4 of our kids on a plane across country, especially with the little guys being under 2. Not. Going. To. Happen. So my husband and I made a pack to start traveling with them by plane after they turn 2, until then, the big kids get to fly. Our last family vacation took us to Washington, D.C., which was such a great trip! The next vacation is taking us to a place my husband and I have been wanting to take the kids to since they were born. Disney World.

It’s not so much that it’s Disney World*, but the fact that we will be staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and taking my son on the Wild Africa Trek. If you know my son, you will know his obsession with animals has existed since he could talk. He is a huge fan of all of them, especially giraffes, and I’m pretty sure he is going to pee his pants when he finds out we are going. That’s right…they don’t know yet. Something else I’ve always wanted to do was to surprise the kiddos with, “Guess where we are going?” and put it on video. And, you get to witness it, too!  Disney World has generously offered to have my family experience Disney World and the Animal Kingdom Lodge, and because of their generosity, I will be documenting my trip from beginning to end, right here on RockStarMomLV. This will be the End of School Year Gift for them on Friday. My husband and I are so excited to tell them! Speaking of husband, unfortunately, he will not be able to join us on this trip, so my mother has graciously offered to accompany us. It will be a great memory for all of us!

The Mob Museum Las Vegas

How close are you with your Family? Would you do anything for them? Be prepared to answer that question at The Mob Museum Las Vegas. Just like when you’re “in”, you hear about these things, but no one really “knows” about them. I felt it was time to go to The Mob Museum and have a look around. I brought my husband as my witness. Result: Seriously impressed.

The building itself is the original courthouse that stood the test of time during the era of heavy Mob activity that took place in Las Vegas. Even the furniture in the courtroom is all the same, including the bench with a steel plate so the judge could quickly dodge a bullet if necessary. But don’t get too excited, this is not just about the Mob’s involvement in Las Vegas. The museum is actually called The Mob Museum: National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, and takes you through the complete journey of what a Mob was, why they were started and how they grew. From there, you will get a taste of what it was like to be in Las Vegas during that time. I have to admit, growing up here, it was kind of crazy to see photos of parents of the kids my husband and I went to school with, and their personal and professional lives being documented throughout the museum. They were on both sides of the law, and I’m not saying who! Learning more about the Mob and its roots really helped understand why and how quickly they grew and rose to power. And, why Vegas was a prime target for wanting to establish a network.

The other reason for taking a visit to the Mob Museum is the historical piece about Las Vegas. Exhibits identify when the city was founded, who founded it, how it grew and the most important piece…gaming. The Mob Museum explores the intent, the interest and the importance of gaming and how it put Las Vegas on the map. Some of the most interesting pieces are the old photos of the budding little railroad town, Section 14 where the town got its start, the Arizona Club, the first “upscale” gaming hall, and the people who fought to make Vegas happen (you hear their names now as Clark County, Mc Carran International Airport and Fremont Street). As you move through the museum, you move through time and see how as the Mob grew, Vegas was also growing, until it reaches a point where they become relevant of one another.

RSMLV Tips:

Plan Accordingly…the Mob Museum is full of really cool engaging and interactive exhibits. You can go through a “Line-Up”, shoot a “Tommy Gun”, and play all kinds of trivia games throughout the museum. There is also a film in courtroom exhibit on the second floor that details the nation hearings that exposed organized crime to America in 1950 and 1951. If you really want to enjoy everything the  Mob Museum has to offer, then give yourself a good 3-4 hours to work your way through.

Family Friendly…this is a tough one. I don’t think I would have brought my 8 and 6 year old. Not because I don’t want to educate them on the significance of the mob in history, but because there are quite a few bloody and graphic photos and scenes that I just don’t want  to explain to them, or give them nightmares about. Unless your child is really mature for his age, I would probably keep this one to the 12 and up crowd.

Shout Out…after spending half the day at the Mob Museum, you’re bound to get hungry. If you’re not up for Italian food or an old-school Vegas Steak House, then take Las Vegas Boulevard towards the Strip, and off to the right you will see a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant called Dona Maria’s Tamales. It’s been around forever and the food and service is great.

Ticket Discounts…if you are a member of the military, law enforcement, teacher or student, you can enjoy a nice discount off the $18 general admission price.* Nevada Residents pay $10, and kids 5-7 pay $12. All discounts require proof with ID.*As of April 2012

Enjoy your time with the family. But, remember, you didn’t hear any of this from me.

Want more evidence? Check out my Google+ Album documenting my tour.

The Mob Museum gave me 2 media passes to visit the museum. Media passes are given after careful consideration and review of media credentials. I was not forced or threatened to say nice things about them. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Town Square Las Vegas

This week I’m loving the Town Square Las Vegas. It’s a local’s get-away and a tourist gold mine, especially when travelling with your little entourage, this spot is sure to please every age in your family.

What I {heart}about Town Square Las Vegas:

Rave Motion Pictures…yes, there is a full service, gigantic movie theater that shows all the latest and greatest flicks that you can take the kiddos to and leave the craziness of the Strip behind. They offer a variety of both adult and kid-friendly films, along with 3-D options as well. Learn more by checking out Rave Cinemas on-line.

Children’s Park…is loaded with dreamy playground equipment you played on as a kid. Merry-go-rounds, a Tree House, a labyrinth of ivy, a unicorn to ride on and a stage to make believe on. Kids can play “House” and “Bakery” while sliding and climbing, jumping and screaming…you know the kind of noise that’s looked down upon in the middle of the hotel lobby unless you just won Mega-Bucks. This is the perfect place to let a kid be a kid in Vegas. There is also a stroller rental at the Concierge, and don’t forget your swimsuit, towel and sunblock because there is a great splash pad to cool down in. Parents, you can rest a little easy knowing the park is secured by alarmed emergency exits, and there is only one main way out. When the kids are done whooping it up, take them on a train ride around Town Square Park.

Whole Foods Market…it’s hard enough to eat healthy when you are on vacation, but it is near impossible when you vacation on the Las Vegas Strip. With the addition of Whole Foods Market, it makes like a little easier to grab those hotel room essentials for healthy snacking and living for babies, kids and parents. If you are really looking to get your green on and looking for some alternative fitness to pep up your day, consider venturing into the Barefoot Sanctuary where owners Alvin Tam and Jada Fire will dazzle you with some challenging yet thought provoking classes like Belly Dancing and Acrofit and Reggae Dance Hall, but you can also catch a yoga class now and then to keep you centered and focused.

i {heart} burgers…a super duper family friendly meal spot with decent food. Imagine that! Walk up to the cashier to order your gourmet burger and fries (kid’s menu is available). Then pair that up with a handcrafted milkshake, we prefer the Carmel-Corn, or wine, beer or cocktail from their full service bar. Dad can catch the game while the kids draw on the walls (it’s allowed and encouraged!), and mom can read up on her Facebook posts, emails and texts. There are plenty of opportunities for Brunches, Kids Eat Free and Happy Hour deals.

Town Square Las Vegas is definitely dialed in to both the local and tourist markets providing a little bit of everything for the modern-day consumer. Great shopping like apple, The Container Store, Old Navy, H&M, and Sephora. Great dining like The Yard House, California Pizza Kitchen and my favorite sandwich place, Johnny McGuire’s. Blue Martini and Double Helix provide a great date night atmosphere…date night? That’s right, it’s all possible at the Town Square. Bring the kiddos for a movie and dinner, then have the Artsy Nannies, an on-site, fully licensed and bonded nanny service, keep an eye on the little ones while you enjoy a cocktail or check out the dueling piano bar.

See? This is why I {heart} Vegas!
