You can already see it, can’t you?  That girl is sassy!  Imagine what I have to deal with in getting her to take her vitamins.

I’ve been on the Reliv Now for Kids plan with my own kids for the last two months.  At first, it was difficult to get them to drink the stuff because I chose the route of honesty.  I guess every parent has a learning lesson, and this one was mine (amongst many others of course).  I have always had this policy to be as honest with my children as absolutely possible.  I always figured there was no reason to lie about things, and I find my kids process information really well.  In fact, I’ve always been upfront with them about nutrition and the “whys-behind” not being able to eat certain things, or why we choose to eat different things than their friends might, for example.  So when I decided to put them on Reliv Now for Kids, I thought, I’d go the honesty route since they’ve handled such situations in the past with ease.

Boy, was I wrong.

We fought every morning about the Reliv…it tasted funny, it made their stomachs hurt, they were going to throw up, blah blah blah.  I tried hiding it in everything you could imagine…maple syrup, ice cream, chocolate milk, oatmeal…and every time they would figure it out.  We were about to leave for a week’s vacation over Spring Break and they were completely distracted.  So, I dropped the can of Reliv into my diaper bag, never mentioned it once and away we went.  Well, every morning, guess what?  They had their Reliv.  They had it in smoothies, strawberry milk, oatmeal and maple syrup.  I sprinkled it over their cereal, added it to their hot choc, and hid it in their applesauce.  They never once caught on to my little game. As my grandma always used to say, “A little white lie never hurt anyone.” Then, the day before we left, they spotted the can in the pantry.  And that was the end of my hiding game.  They became even sharper and more attuned to what I was serving them.  My daughter straight out refused to eat or drink anything I made for her.  My husband had to start making her breakfast, and he was no good at the “Hide the Reliv” game.  I gave them an ultimatum.  They either had to drink the Reliv, or they had to take a plethora of vitamins.  My son, of course, being the “quickest way from A to B” kind of thinker, chose the Reliv.  My daughter, on the other hand, refused.  She also refused the vitamins.

I am not kidding when I say I have probably dropped about $200 on vitamins for my daughter to try in the last two weeks.  It is seriously ridiculous.  On one hand, I want her to take the Omega 3s, DHA, ARA, Immunity, Vitamin A,D,K…blah blah blah…on the other hand, reality: most of it tastes like crap and I wouldn’t eat it either.  Since we don’t have the money to throw around on vitamins, I figured my readers may not as well.  To save you time and money, I thought I would go through our list to save you the aggravation.

Save Nemo...he causes fishy-burps!

1.  Disney Omega-3 + Vitamin D3 gummies: We bough these because, naturally, they have little Nemo swimming on the label.  Cute. Fun. Disney…so gross, I’m surprised she actually took these the longest. Immediately when you open up the jar, they smell rank of fish oil, which a person at Whole Foods recently told me, by the time most of the fish oils are processed into these vitamins, they are rancid…that is why you burp up “fish”.  Gross.

Hero Gummies

Fish Free-Strawberry Flavor

2.  The Original Gummy Vitamin- Yummi Bears by Hero:  These are actually not made with fish oil.  They are “Fish Free Omega 3*6*9.  They, too, are also disgusting.  Cute little gummy bears by the brand we all know and love as gummy bear makers.  They are pink and strawberry flavored, and I almost gagged trying to eat one.

nordic naturals

Fizzy Orange Drink

3.  Nordic Naturals-omega-3 effervescent: Now we are getting somewhere…at least with my son.  He had no problem drinking the orange fizzy drink, which is just a packet of powder added to water.  Stella, on the other hand, refused.  I even came home with the chewable soft gels, that have a lemon flavor to them.  Nope.  Wouldn’t take them.

Flax Seed Oil and other good things...

4.  Good ole’ Flax Seed Oil: I purchased the Whole Foods 360 brand in their refrigerator section.  After my frustration of her refusal to take any of the above, I forced her, yes, forced her, to drink a teaspoon of Flax Seed Oil.  Result: She vomitted her breakfast of oatmeal all over the kitchen floor, to which my husband, who was witness to all of this said, “Um, yeah, you’re going to clean up that mess.”  Wasn’t pretty.

So after spending around $200 on tried and failed Omega-3 products, I resorted back to hiding them in her foods.  On a side note, Whole Foods does have a policy that they will take back opened vitamins and refund your money, if you have your receipt, or store credit without one.  After cleaning up Stella’s breakfast off the floor, and managing to not produce more myself, it occurred to me that honesty may not be the best policy.  In fact, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her…it will make her healthier!  Here is what I have been doing for the last two weeks, and so far, has been working like a charm.

  • She loves oatmeal: I add Flax Seed Oil and squirt the Omega 3 soft gels into her oatmeal, and stir it up.  She has no idea it’s in there, and tells me every morning how much she LOVES my oatmeal!
  • She loves salad: What’s even better is that she will only eat oil and vinegar on her salad…add a little Flax Seed and Omega 3 to her dressing, and voila!
  • She loves maple syrup: Whenever I can, I still sprinkle the Reliv Now for Kids in her maple syrup and mix it up really well so she cannot taste it.

She might think she has outsmarted me in this struggle, and that’s OK.  As long as she keeps giving me ways to sneak it into her food, it keeps me challenged. And guess what?  I, myself, have been popping an Omega-3 once a day, and I’ve started to notice the energy and focus I get from it.  As long as I’m taking my Omega-3s, there is no way she won’t be taking hers!

Reliv for Kids: Why I Choose This Product

It started when I was a freshman in college.  In fact, it started with the Freshman 15.  I was always very active as a child and a teen-ager.  But when I got to college, and threw caution out the window, I began to realize it was going to take way more than just being active to maintain my svelte figure.  I was away from home for the first time, indulging in late night food binges, keg parties, and fast food lunches.  My eating habits were way off, and though I was still active, I wasn’t as consistent like I was in high school…regular cheerleading and dance practices that kept me active 3-4 times a week.  Just like that, I had cellulite and a cholesterol test that came back high for my age.  Up until this point, what I knew about health and nutrition was not going to be enough to create habits to last me a life time.  I had to do more.

Although, I definitely had my fair share of Mc Donald’s and Burger King growing up, I was exposed to the healthier side of nutrition through my mom, grandma and uncle.  I remember my mom preparing dinner and telling me to always serve a protein, starch, and at least two veggies…of different colors, and you should always try to recreate the colors of the rainbow…think red (tomatoes), orange (carrots), yellow (squash), green (spinach), purple (eggplant)…well, almost every color, it’s hard to come up with a “blue”.  My grandmother would always give me tips and advice on how to get the most nutrition out of your veggies and fruits, and my uncle was a semi-professional athlete, so he was a health fanatic.  Growing up with my brother, sister and cousins, whenever we spent the night at their house, we knew we would only get wheat bread, cereal without sugar, juice, milk or water and a vitamin supplement…and not the chalky, pastel colored Flintstones vitamins, we would each be given a dropper full of liquid vitamins.  Though we kind of dreaded that about going over there, he was the first person I went to when I decided it was time for me to be more aware of my own nutrition.

I attended college in San Diego.  Living in California exposed me to a whole new way of eating, and my parents made fun of the food I had learned to love.  They called my salads “freeway greens”, they balked at my hummus, and laughed at my whole wheat breads and black and green teas without milk or sugar.  Living in San Diego, it was easy to find these things as the neighborhoods were filled with specialty shops, like Trader Joe’s and Wild Oats, where you could find anything and everything healthy and gourmet.  Coming home for the holidays was a different story.  Las Vegas was behind like 10-15 years as far as health and nutrition went.  I sought out local vitamin and nutrition stores in strip malls that carried items that I couldn’t find anywhere else.  I had committed long ago, to my health and my choices of eating.  I knew it wasn’t going to be cheap, but I wasn’t OK with the alternative.  That was just the beginning of my journey.  Since then, it has lead me down the path of organic, preservative and chemical free, I tried vegan and vegetarian for awhile, and always sought out the most powerful vitamins, minerals and health supplements I could find.  Another tip from my uncle was never to buy vitamins from a grocery store.  That they are loaded with fillers and the body doesn’t absorb half of what it should.  He reminded me to always buy from a health food store and seek out whole food nutrition when it came to supplements…liquid form was the best.

I have to admit, I was super strict about all of this, until I got pregnant with my first son.  I was not prepared for how sick I was going to be.  I didn’t leave my house for three months because I threw up every five steps.  I couldn’t keep down a pre-natal vitamin to save my life, so my doctor prescribed Folic Acid instead.  I didn’t think about organic or whole food, I just figured she prescribed it, it must be OK.  I also ate whatever made me feel better, which usually consisted of McDonald’s cheeseburgers and Taco Bell burritos.  I gained 80 pounds with my son.  It took me almost two years to get my health back on track and eating the way I was before the baby.  I was finally down to a size I had never been before, then -BOOM- knocked up with my daughter.  Sick again, but this time able to take a pre-natal…I took what the doctor prescribed.  I only gained 40 pounds, but didn’t think too much about my nutrition during my pregnancy.  I ate pastrami sandwiches like they might be last one I ever ate.  About a year after my daughter was born, I started working for the Guru Fitness Company.  Though I had already practiced and knew about the benefits of choosing an all organic, whole foods lifestyle, working there and being surrounded by those who lived and practiced it on a daily basis was even more inspiring and supported me to do more about my health.  I participated in cleanses and tried my hand at vegan.  I learned so much in those two years there, that I was able to re-build my lifestyle and gain back my old habits.  I had decided that my children would also eat this way, and I explained to them the benefits of doing so.  When I became pregnant with the twins, I went to Whole Foods and chose a whole food, vegan, pre-natal vitamin.  I was conscious of what I was putting into my body, I continued to practice yoga and run and walk for as long as I could.  This time around, I gained 50 pounds, and within the first six months of their birth, I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight.  (My pre-pregnancy body is a whole other story!)

In the meantime I became very aware of the lack of nutrition being offered to our children through means of prepared foods, vitamins and minerals.  I understood that they needed to continue with Omega 3s, DHA and RHA, for eye development and brain growth and multitude of other things.  I searched high and low- websites, Whole Foods, nutrition stores- for something that was a synergistic product, made with minimal to no fillers or animal by-products, with a high absorption level and that had everything they needed.  I am not kidding, at one point, I was feeding my son and daughter each the following:

  • 2 multi-vitamins (tried a fizzy powder packet, they wouldn’t drink it)
  • 4 DHA/Omega 3 gummies (I tried a liquid form and they almost threw up every time)
  • 1 pro-biotic chewable tablet

No fail, I would find 5 out of 7 shoved in a crayon box, left in their pockets, or hidden in the cup holders in my car.  I was begging someone to tell me about an amazing kid’s product that would have everything I needed in it.  This is where Kelly May came in to the picture for me.  I touched on this in my prior post, but Kelly also approached me because she knew my daughter has asthma and allergies.  Shortly after my daughter was born, she developed RSV, and since then, we have been going back and forth from pediatrician to allergy specialist to get her breathing under control.  She has been on Singular, nasal spray and breathing treatments daily for the last three years.  I am concerned about her health in general, as I truly hope she grows out of the asthma…it generates such fear in me for her…and who knows what the long term affect of all these drugs will have on her growth, behavior, and mental capacity.  I already see issues with her behavior and a shift in energy at night, and I believe it is due to the side affects of these medications.  I would love for her to be drug-free, and be able take healthy breaths on her own.  Kelly told me stories about children taking Reliv for Kids, and it helping tremendously with their allergies.  My son is hardly ever sick, but has been complaining frequently about his stomach.  It’s enough to get my attention, and I’m not positive it isn’t his diet or maybe some anxiety or stress associated with school…maybe even the fact that we’ve had some changes in our own family with the twins being born, and it’s causing him some general upset which is coming out in the form of a tummy ache.  The pediatrician suggested giving him Miralax everyday and a follow up appointment in two weeks.  After listening to Kelly’s presentation about Reliv, I decided to forgo the Miralx and try this on him instead.  I would much rather him benefit from the vitamins/minerals/Omega 3/DHA combination in hopes the concoction will improve his digestion and nervous system, than serve him a laxative every day.

In respect of keeping this to the point, I just wanted to share who I was, why I was choosing to experiment with this, and what I was trying to accomplish by using it.  Again, I recognize this is a direct marketing concept, which tends to bring out the cynicism in people.  I’ve been in marketing for 15 years, trust me, I understand.  I also believe in giving products a chance if they meet the requirements I am looking for.  Just because it’s not FDA approved doesn’t mean it’s not a great product.  Our government and health structures are lagging and lacking, and at some point, it is our life, our bodies and we need to look out for numero uno!  So, I’m giving Reliv for Kids a try, and these are my stories of struggle and (hopefully) accomplishments with my kids’ health and nutrition.

Thanks for reading.

Yes! It is a direct marketing program. Let’s just get that out of the way, out in the open, let’s address the elephant in the room. It is what it is. But, I’m not here to sell you on it. I’m not even a distributor. I was invited by an acquaintance of mine to listen to her schpeel on the Reliv product for kids. She is an assistant to a Kindergarten teacher, so she’s around these frisky, energetic angels all day, and sees first hand how the lack of nutrition, no matter how hard we try, affects the body and minds of our children.

This invitation couldn’t have come at a better time. The current topics in the media in regards to chemicals, dyes, fillers, etc. being linked directly to our kids’ behaviors, got me thinking that I’m not providing my own children with enough nutrition to keep them strong and healthy and use all of their brain power, and their energy, at the right time of day. In addition, a girlfriend of mine has been spending the last 30 days eliminating all of these nasty toxins from her child’s diet in hopes it would give her some kind of answer to the unbalanced energy transfer her daughter was experiencing as well. A painstaking, time consuming task, that has actually started to pay off for her. Eventhough I habitually read labels and only allow my kids to eat certain types of food…directing them to healthier options vs fatty, sugary artificial ones…I knew I couldn’t go at it alone. Even buying organic doesn’t always promise that the tomato wasn’t picked off the vine before it ripened enough to provide our bodies with the lycopene we think we are getting. They needed something more, and I wanted a one-stop-shop of all the vitamins, minerals, Omega-3s, DHA, ARA whatever they needed. I am tired of dispensing 12 vitamins a day, and finding half of them shoved in the crayon box after they’ve left for school. I also had concerns about how much was actually being absorbed into their blood stream and what their body was utilizing.

Enter Reliv Now for Kids. It is a US distributed product, which can also be purchased in Canada and Australia as well, and has been available to the market for 22 years. It is a powder form, so it makes it even more soluble (98-99% is absorbed) and the contents are blended to create a synergistic compound, meaning they all flow and connect and groove together so they are not fighting each other once consumed. The vitamins and minerals work together to help the product do its thing.

Kelly gave me all kinds of information and real-life stories about miracle regressions and physical transformations…but she had me sold in the first few minutes of her presentation. And, I must say, I use the word “sold” lightly, because she is truly passionate about this product and really just wants others to know about it. It helped her, she believes in it, she has seen it help others, and therefore, she wants to share it with the world. She believes in this product so much, that she has graciously offered to support both of my older kids on it for three months, which is the recommended length of the trial period. This is not a cheap product! It is a lifestyle commitment, and a choice Kelly is commited to with her own family. In fact, she insists on being my consultant for the three month period to ensure that I am using Reliv for Kids properly to get the ultimate results. In return, she wants my honest opinion and review of her product, which I have offered to give her. I promised her it would not be biased, swayed or tempered in anyway. It will come straight from my own experience with it, as I know my readers trust what I have to say, and I respect that trust.

So without further ado…I give you Reliv Now for Kids! I will be posting updates periodically on my FaceBook page and Twitter, as well as posting on my blog a weekly summary of results. Again, this is a 3 month process, so a fun journey it will be! I’m so excited to try this product, I ordered some for myself! So, I’ll share that insight with you as well. In the meantime, if you want to start learning more about Reliv, check out their website and FaceBook pages.

Cheers to Nutrition!
