PBS Kids has done again with the new mathematically focused show, Peg + Cat. The twins and I had the opportunity to screen the show before it airs Monday, October 7th at 9am. Peg + Cat is created by Billy Aronson, and is A Fred Rogers Program, along with other well-known and lovable PBS Kids shows like, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Here are 8 things I love about Peg + Cat:

Peg+Cat Screen

1. It’s a mathematics based, and the star of the show is a little girl, Peg, and her cat. I love the main character working on and solving math problems is a girl. Love the idea that Peg is helping little girls ages 3-5 build confidence with an unbiased view of the subject that is generally seen as male dominant.

2. I love Peg! Oh my gosh- she’s hip, adorable and spunky! The boys were laughing at her antics, and she was easy to watch.

3. I LOVE how the characters look hand drawn, and are drawn on graph paper in keeping with the math theme. It’s the details that count.

4. Speaking of details…I love how no matter the story line, there is always a way to teach math. Whether it’s cleaning her room, exploring through outer space or gathering the chickens, it is a learning story without the obvious signs of teaching.FTCDisclosure

5. I love how Peg + Cat makes math fun! Wait until you hear the groovy music and catchy tunes. The twins would stand up and dance, or do a little happy dance right in their seat. The story lines are modern and fun, and based on every day, real life situations, proving that math is everywhere!

6. Not only are the parents engaged, but the kids are, too! Throughout the stories Peg has catch phrases like, “We’ve got a problem!”, or, “I’m totally freaking out!!”. The kids in the screening room were giggling and gasping, and answering her back when she posed a question to her TV audience.

7. My 3 year old boys loved the show, and when I introduced it to my 7 year old daughter, she took to it immediately. She especially loved the book that was gifted to us, The Chicken Problem.

8. Even though my kids can watch Peg + Cat on Vegas PBS, Channel 10, every Monday-Friday at 9am, they can continue their mathematical adventures through space, Medieval times, bath time or on a farm by downloading the app in iTunes or The Marketplace.

Peg + Cat is fun, entertaining and educational. A new concept to teaching math by using music, every day life problems, and original stories that keep children involved and excited for more. Add Peg + Cat to your DVR List, and watch it with your little entourage! To learn more about Peg + Cat, visit the PBSKids website.

Disney’s Newest Princess Sofia the First on DVD

Meet Sofia. She was just a girl in the village doin’ alright, then she became a princess over night when the King met her mother and swept them away to live in a castle and a storybook world in Enchancia. Now she is working on how to do “royalty right,” as Sofia the First. My family was selected to screen the new DVD available in stores on September 17th. At first, I wasn’t so sure my twins would be into the series, having it be about a princess after all, so thought I would be watching it with my 7 year old daughter. How incorrect I was. My twins love the entire Disney Jr. Playhouse series– all of them Special Agent Oso, Handy Manny, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Doc McStuffins, and of course the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Not only do they adore all the characters, but they also love to sing along. And, I’m not kidding when I say they totally get into it- arms up, dancing, shouting back at the TV, they love all of it. Including Sofia the First. The photo below is a bit grainy, but it is the boys at the new Playhouse Disney Jr. at California Adventures in Anaheim, California. They were the groupies of the show, treating every act like they were rockstars!

What is so great about this particular DVD release is the short film addition from Frozen. The boys laugh aloud at the moose. They think he is just hysterical. And, the animation is pretty cool. Which of course, gets me excited to see the animated film this November when it comes out. There is also a Sofia dress up doll kit that my daughter snatched up right away and began putting together on her desk. Immediately I felt like the whole family was involved in the Sofia the First DVD.

Here is the synopsis:

Your favorite little princess-in-training returns for more music, majesty and magical fun, so get ready to have a ball with Sofia the First! Becoming royalty overnight is every girl’s dream, and Sofia is eager to prove she can be a true princess. Visit an enchanted circus, meet a pet dragon and soar through desert skies with Sofia and Amber on a magic carpet ride!  But when their high-flying adventure veers off course, it’s special guest Princess Jasmine to the rescue with inspiring advice about trying new things, staying strong and trusting yourself. Sparkling with extraordinary song, unforgettable characters and thrilling surprises, Ready to Be A Princess opens the door to a whole new world of kindness, helping others and being the best you can be!

The dvd itself has 5 different episodes and features cameos from some of your favorite Disney Princesses like Jasmine. The episodes explore everyday experiences like honesty, loyalty, courage, independence, compassion and grace, characteristics of a true princess, and depicts them in a way children can relate. As a mother, I’m often struggling with how to teach my children how to posses these qualities and understand why they are important to practice. The episodes on the DVD certainly help as a guide in some of the intangible parenting issues. There is one episode in particular, “A Royal Mess,” where Sofia takes the blame for an accident her brother James caused. Common sense gets you thinking, “wow, that’s really sweet she did that for her brother,” then as the story goes on, the lesson begins to hit as to why that is really not a good thing to do. I love that story because I know with four children, something like that is bound to happen, if it hasn’t already.

As usual, the voice casting is terrific as only Disney can do. I love trying to guess the actors to the voices, but sometimes I need a cheat sheet:

Ariel Winter (ABC TV’s “Modern Family”) as Sofia, Sara Ramirez (ABC TVs “Grey’s Anatomy”) as Queen Miranda, Wayne Brady (TV’s “Let’s Make A Deal”) as Clover & Tim Gunn (TV’s “Project Runway”) as Baileywick

The episodes available on this DVD:

                                  1- “A Royal Mess”

                                  2- “The Shy Princess”

                                  3 – “Blue Ribbon Bunny”

                                  4 – “The Princess Test”

5 – “Two To Tangu” (Jasmine Episode)

Take a trip to Enchancia with Sofia the First and see what being a true princess is all about! You can learn more about Sofia the First by visiting the Disney Junior Website.  FTCDisclosure

Every year at this time, I can’t help but reflect and relive those moments on that fateful morning 12 years ago. I write an annual post to honor those who gave their lives, who give their lives and fight for our freedom everyday. The civilian, the child, the soldiers, the firefighters, the politicians (yes, there are some), you, me, any American who recognizes and strives for the freedoms on which our country was founded. I also write this post to remember my friends and family who lost loved ones in the World Trade Center. For my friends and family who lived and worked in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania at the time, and are still haunted every day from the sights, sounds, and compromise of our security. Being on the West coast, I often feel removed from the hardships that seem to affect the East. I do my best to empathize and support, but with the distance between us, I wonder if I truly feel the depths of the wounds.

Last December, my husband and I took our oldest children to New York City. I was beyond thrilled to visit one of my favorite cities in the world. It would be their first time, and our agendas were packed. Top of the list was a visit to the World Trade Center 9-11 Memorial and Freedom Tower. I was anxious and nervous to get there. I wasn’t really sure how my kids would react to being there. Would they get it? Would they be respectful? Would they really understand the impact of standing in the middle of where a national and global catastrophe had occurred 11 years earlier?

As soon as we walked through the security lines, I immediately felt an overwhelming sadness. Tears filled up in my eyes. I felt selfish for crying. I, personally, didn’t lose anyone, but I knew people who did. I knew stories from friends and family who couldn’t get out of the city. I tried to imagine what it felt like to be there on that day. I felt helpless and humble at the same time. We walked around the fountains, and I just couldn’t bring myself to take any photos. It felt disrespectful. I felt like I should just be solemn and praying. Not that I minded anyone else taking photos. Everyone there was very respectful and quiet. And, everyone grieves in their own way.  I wouldn’t take that away from anyone. We talked to the kids about what happened. But, they already knew. They wanted to find my girlfriend’s relative’s name who passed. I didn’t know how, so we just walked around hoping to spot it, engraved in bronze among a mass of thousands.

After awhile, we said our peaceful good-bye’s and patriotic thank you’s. We were starving, and decided to find lunch in the Battery Park area. As we were walking, we came across a neighborhood park with a playground. It was so neatly kept. The entire area was beautiful, and my husband and I talked about how we would like to live in a neighborhood like Battery Park if we ever lived in a big city like New York. As the kids played and we drank our coffee, we took in the scene and life of the streets and sidewalks. My son started climbing on a jungle gym, and soon convinced his sister to join him. As their mother, how could I miss this innocent moment of them playing together at a park in New York City. I began clicking away, and noticed that in the background was the new Freedom Tower, still under construction. I pointed it out to my husband right away. Again, a bittersweet moment. We both kept commenting on how surreal it was for these innocent children to be climbing and swinging and laughing on a crisp winter day, while a new symbol of Freedom was being reconstructed behind them. So surreal. I love these photos. When they are old enough to appreciate the moment we captured, I’m sure they will, too.

My last thought for today is solidarity. It seems we say it and hear it so much now, it almost feels cliche at times. While we were there, Sandy had just ripped through the city months before, leaving New York, once again, rebuilding. We couldn’t get close enough to the Statue of Liberty for the kids to see up close and personal, so this shot was taken from a view in Battery Park. My cousins who work in the Financial District, couldn’t come meet us for lunch because the trucks and pumps were blocking all the roads. But, still New Yorkers persevere. A few days later the Sandy Hook incident occurred, followed by a few months later with the Boston Marathon Bombing. All of these things, all of these events, the actions that are supposed to make us grow weaker, that are intended to tear us apart and break down our walls…I’ve only seen the American people stand stronger. It’s amazing. It often reminds me of the Grinch trying to steal Christmas from the Who’s. No matter what he did or how hard he tried, he couldn’t break their spirit. Because Christmas is not about the giving and the receiving, it’s about the people you celebrate it with and for. Just like America is not about the materialism and the greed. It’s about the people who make this country great. You can’t break the American spirit. We keep on keeping on.

Many blessings, humbled thoughts and prayers of thanks to all Americans today as we celebrate Patriot’s Day. And, may we never, ever forget.
