Last summer, a friend convinced me to by my first pair of TOMS. We happened to be shopping at Neiman Marcus in the Fashion Show Mall on the Las Vegas Strip. I had seen the TOMS brand and admired their philosophy of One for One, but wasn’t convinced they were the right look for me. Then I saw the exclusive collection made for the Neiman Marcus stores. I bought the canvas cheetah print for around $85 (yes, I paid that much for a pair of TOMS), and that was that. They have lasted me  through social media conferences, conventions, Disneyland, busy airports…they are comfy, great and stylish enough for me. So, I bought my daughter a pair of the pink sparkly ones. Then the same friend bought the twins a pair for their 1st birthdays. We are addicted to TOMS!

My daughter and I were introduced to the Style Your Sole event when we attended the D23 conference last summer. It was crazy crowded, so we didn’t even attempt to check it out. We heard it was cool, though, so when I was approached by Neiman Marcus in Las Vegas to cover their event, I was way excited.

TOMS

I purchased a new pair of TOMS for my daughter, oldest son and the nanny (she deserves a pair after all the walking we make her do!) from Neiman Marcus. TOMS hires local artists to participate in the event. The kids draw a picture of what they want their shoes to look like, and the artists take acrylic paints and create your kids’ vision on their new pair of TOMS.

Both of my kids loved the event. There was a great photo booth, cookies, juice, coloring activities and slides to keep the kids entertained while the artists were busy working. The shoes came out great, the kids had a good time, and we all supported a wonderful cause. Now they have their own exclusive pair of TOMS without the added cost!

When my two older kids were little, I sought out Tiny Impressions to come to my house and make their hand/footprints out of ceramic for me.  From their suggestion, I also invited my sister and sister-in-law who brought my 3 three nephews.  With 5 kids in total, all under the age of 5, Connie, the owner, came in my house and wham-bam-thank you ma’am…all 5 kids were done in a matter of minutes.  They didn’t even know what hit ’em!  And now, sitting on my shelf, a high, very high shelf, sit my memories of my babies hands and feet.  They are precious to me, and  that is why I am so excited about today’s deal!  A Tiny Impressions paint party for 6 in the comfort of your own home.

Here is more info from Tiny Impressions:

“Once the party is booked, the customer gets to choose from plates, mugs or bowls.  We show up at their place, and bring all the supplies for the kiddos to paint ( paint, bushes, sponges, smoc’s and plenty of wipes to clean up!).  We help the kiddos create their masterpieces.  We can also paint their hand, and put their print on their piece!

Once the pieces are painted, we label each one, pack them away, clean up, then bring the pieces back to the studio  (our home… .but you don’t need to put that).  Then each one is carefully glazed then kiln fired.  Once the pieces come out of the kiln, they are then returned to where the party was held.  Usually takes about 5-7 days for returned pieces.  $15 per extra person.”

Because you ROCK, Plum District is offering RockStarMomLV readers an early glimpse of this deal that is set to go live tomorrow morning.  And, because they ROCK, Plum District is offering 15% off this deal to RSMLV readers!  It is a limited deal on the coupon offer, so make sure you go here now and enter Code:HANDPRINT to get your 15% off.

And, if that isn’t cool enough, I am giving away (1) Paint Your Party to a lucky RockStarMomLV winner!

Winners will be announced via RaffleCopter.

15 Things Your Pre-Schooler Can Do Without You Over the Summer

Not only is Lisa the Director of the Summit Ridge Summer Day Camp at the Henderson International School, she is also the mother of three busy boys ages 7, 5 and 2 years old.  Her teaching experience gave her some insight on how to keep her boys busy during Summer Break, and she has graciously offered to share with us!

Last summer I sent my son to a half-day camp, with the 2nd half of the day at    “Camp Mom, I’m bored,” so I made a “menu” of activities for him to do.  I had gotten the idea from a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Conference back when I was teaching 5th grade in California.  I titled it “I Have Nothing to Do”.  Every afternoon while his brothers napped, he could pick any activity from the menu.  There were 20 different options and I told him he could pick the same one everyday……or not.  He could do just one activity the entire time or choose several.  But it was his 1.5 hours to fill by doing something alone, which did not involve electronics or me.  (If I had to play one more game of UNO, I knew I would snap!)

It started out with the usual….

1. Take a nap or just rest.

2.  Read a book.

3.  Do some pages in a workbook.

4.  Write in a journal (I bought him one with a space for illustrations and gave him a list of fun topic ideas taped to the inside cover).

But then my teacher juices started to flow, and I came up with some fun activities.  Well, at least I thought they were fun, but more importantly, they did not involve me.  It started as 90-minutes of needed “Mommy Peace & Quiet”, but it became about him and his choices of what he could do by himself.  These activities were academic, creative, and time consuming.   I tried to think of assignments I knew he would enjoy and others I thought he should try.

5.  Make a map of our neighborhood.

6.  Draw and label our family tree.

7.  Design a racecar with super powers. Label its parts.

8.  Use a ruler to measure 20 items in your. Document your findings.

9.  List 25 of your friends in alphabetical order.

10.  Make a menu for a make-believe restaurant with all your favorite foods.

11.  Use old magazines/catalogues and cut out pictures of your favorite things and saying to make a collage.

12.  Write a letter to a family member in another state.

13.  Review your math facts using flash cards and test yourself.

14. Use Lego’s to build your dream house.

15. Complete a 100 piece puzzle by yourself and glue it together.

We made it a part of our summer routine….not an option, but one with options.  He had a box with all the materials he might need and we kept it on a shelf that only he could reach.  I didn’t make him stay in his room, but he couldn’t ask me for help until the 90 minutes were up.  (We used an egg timer to help.) By the time school started, he had memorized all of his addition and subtraction facts,  made a collection of amazing collages and drawings, and now has a treasured illustrated journal (Thank you Diary of a Wimpy Kid for making journals somewhat hip!) that he loves to look back on and read even today.  Most activities he didn’t even try, but I think it was all the choices he liked most.    And the few activities he loved, he will still do today on a rainy day.
