Travel Entertainment for Kids | Frolic

OK! The vacation has been booked. Itinerary confirmed! And, kids have been told! (See our fun video below on how we surprised the kiddos about our trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.) My daughter has been frantically asking me about how long we will be on the airplane for. Though she has flown cross country, she still gets nervous about the “In-Flight Entertainment,” and frankly, so do I. From experience, I have learned to have the older kids (once they reach 4 or 5 years old) to pack their own Entertainment Bag (with guidance, of course). My biggest fear is that from 35,000 feet up, stuck in a cabin, they are gonna get bored and people are gonna get annoyed. So, I also pack extra things in my own bag…new toys, travel games, fun snacks, things they are not expecting so the flight goes a little easier.

But just in case in your stuck, I found some additional resources from some real Travel Pros!

APPS for your SmartPhone– I researched and found some pretty cool Free Las Vegas Apps that would be beneficial if you are traveling to Las Vegas this summer, and wrote about it on the TravelingMom website, which is a great resource for all your family traveling needs. I also came across these fun drawing apps, iLuvDrawing*. They were created by a mom with young children in mind. there are three to choose from, Draw Animals, Draw Monsters or Draw People, and are available in the iTunes store from $.99 – $2.99 depending on which device you download them to. My daughter loved the Draw People while my son loves the Draw Animals. If your kids are into creating and artsy apps, then I would suggest biting the bullet and purchasing at least one to try out. It kept my kids pretty busy, and the end result is that they will be able to take their learnings from the app and apply it to an actual paper drawing. There is a sweet voice that walks the kids through the instructions as well, so it’s something they will remember while drawing on their own.

The running joke in our family is that Mom makes the kids do “Stations” all through the summer. One day, they’ll thank me, I’m sure of it, but for now, I have to find ways to keep it interesting. By the way, my Stations are mobile, so it doesn’t matter where we are in the world, the kids still have to practice their lessons. As these TravelingMoms point out though, there is still plenty to be learned during your summer escapades.

I love what Connie Roberts, Disabled Traveling Mom, writes about how to incorporate education into your summer travels through language, culture and more. For those taking a road trip and want your kids to still  read, check out Audio Books for Your Kids, by Traveling Mom, Elizabeth Rodgers.

Do you have any great tips for traveling with kids? Would love to hear them!

*iLuv Drawing provided me the codes to download and try the iLuvDrawing People, Monsters and Animals. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Disney, family, Las Vegas

As much as I love the romantic vision of not having to get kids to bed, wake up, lunches made, homework done and off to school on-time routine in the morning, the reality is that it just adds another notch in my stress level of how I’m going to keep 4 kids entertained all summer without losing my sanity! Summer camp sign-ups are complete- yes, even the twinners are going, don’t judge. We’ve planned our stay down in Dana Point. I’ve ordered the water toys for the backyard. All that’s left is to get our actual planned vacation confirmed and organized. Vacation, you say? Why, yes. If you did not know much about me, you should know this. I LOVE TO TRAVEL. And, I’ve decided that even having 4 kids is not going to slow me down. Now it’s all a matter of learning how to do it with 4 kids!

First thing’s first, though…we have travelled pretty extensively with the twins, enduring several road trips with them as infants to Williams, AZ for Polar Express, Telluride, CO for 4th of July, and several times back and forth to Dana Point and Disney, we also know when too much is too much. Like trying to put all 4 of our kids on a plane across country, especially with the little guys being under 2. Not. Going. To. Happen. So my husband and I made a pack to start traveling with them by plane after they turn 2, until then, the big kids get to fly. Our last family vacation took us to Washington, D.C., which was such a great trip! The next vacation is taking us to a place my husband and I have been wanting to take the kids to since they were born. Disney World.

It’s not so much that it’s Disney World*, but the fact that we will be staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and taking my son on the Wild Africa Trek. If you know my son, you will know his obsession with animals has existed since he could talk. He is a huge fan of all of them, especially giraffes, and I’m pretty sure he is going to pee his pants when he finds out we are going. That’s right…they don’t know yet. Something else I’ve always wanted to do was to surprise the kiddos with, “Guess where we are going?” and put it on video. And, you get to witness it, too!  Disney World has generously offered to have my family experience Disney World and the Animal Kingdom Lodge, and because of their generosity, I will be documenting my trip from beginning to end, right here on RockStarMomLV. This will be the End of School Year Gift for them on Friday. My husband and I are so excited to tell them! Speaking of husband, unfortunately, he will not be able to join us on this trip, so my mother has graciously offered to accompany us. It will be a great memory for all of us!

Now, to get geared up for this amazing adventure, there are a few things I’ve been researching, and thought I would share with you, in hopes it will help you survive summer travel with your kids!

Stressed about Airline Security with the kids? Stand By Traveling Mom, Chris Bird, takes us through the Family Lane Makes Airport Security a Breeze , while Memories Traveling Mom, Connie DeMille, shares Tips for Getting Through Airport Security.

Worried about that long flight or cross country road trip? GoodnCrazy Traveling Mom, Carissa Rogers, gives 6 Travel Tips to Keep Kids Entertained.

OK! Now get packing! And, make sure to follow along on my Disney World adventures with the kids this summer on FaceBook, Google+ and Twitter!

*I must disclose that Disney World has provided me and my family a vacation to the Disney World Resort via my affiliation with TravelingMom. All thoughts and words are 100% my own.

BHAGS, goal coaching, goals, new years resolutions

Funny the things you find when you move.  I have a love/hate relationship with moving.  On one hand, I was overwhelmed, exhausted, emotional and tense for the last four weeks.  On the other hand, purging is so good for the soul.

While going through what seemed like the never ending build-up of boxes, I came across a Goal Coaching worksheet my husband and I had done together almost a year ago today.  We just had the twins, and it was great to go back and re-visit to see if we were in-line with what we had set-out to do.  In fact, we were on most of it. We moved into a new house.  My husband excelled in his career, and I continued to build my blog.

It was also a good reminder to revisit where we are now, and in which direction we are headed.  Ironically, we sat down the other night and went through our goals again before I came across last year’s worksheet.  Typically, most of us wait until New Year’s to sit down and re-think our goals, or resolutions, as we call them.  But I’m beginning to think maybe we would take ourselves a little more serious if we did it before the expected date.  What if we did them when no one expected us to?  Would we hold to them longer?  Would we be more authentic with ourselves?  Hold ourselves accountable for more?  Just a thought.

Here’s a trip down memory lane (I definitely think my writing has improved since then, no?) to jump start your Goal Setting fever for 2012.

Enjoy!
