On February 23rd, I’m going to do something I would never allow my kids to do (OK, well, not on a regular basis!)…I’m going to roll around in the mud!

In my quest to re-ignite my fitness routine, I was asked by the Dirty Girl Mud Run for Las Vegas to be a blog ambassador. Though I’ve seen and have had tons of friends do these races, I’ve not done one myself. And, since my motto is, “Do One Things A Day That Scares You,” I decided this should be that thing for February 23rd.

At 10am, I will race through an obstacle course smothered and layered and covered in mud, with hopefully, a bunch of my friends, and feel a great sense of satisfaction afterwards!

What I love about this idea is Teams are encouraged, you can skip obstacles that are too difficult, and cancer survivors race for free! Check out what the Go Dirty Girl team has to say:

An untimed obstacle course that welcomes women of all ages and athletic abilities, Dirty Girl Mud Run challenges women to break from their routine for a day, get out of their comfort zones, get dirty, and accomplish something brand new – all while having a blast. Every one of the obstacles—from the “Utopian Tubes” tunnel crawl to the “PMS (Pretty Muddy Stuff)” mud pit—is optional, so participants can skip anything they find too difficult. Forming teams is encouraged, and so are crazy team uniforms. A Dirty Girl Mud Run comes with excitement, laughter, and camaraderie—as well as lots of music, food and drinks. From start to finish, it’s an unforgettable event and an incredible teambuilding experience.

The time and location for this is currently TBD, but you can follow along here, on the RockStarMomLV Facebook, or on the Go Dirty Girl Facebook page to keep up to date on all the latest info. If you are ready to sign up go to the Go Dirty Girl website to register, and use this discount code: DGTUBLOG20 to save 20% on your total registration.

Have you gotten Dirty before? I’d love to hear about your experience!

Meg and Frank Lowery have always impressed me. From the time I met them back in our lululemon athletica days when Frank was the Triathlon Ambassador, I knew they were a power couple in the sports and racing world. A little over 10 years ago, the Lowerys put together one of Southern Nevada’s most famous triathlons, the Silverman, where athletes would come from all over the country and the world to compete in one of the toughest courses in North America. Though I never competed myself, I found the event to be inspiring, not only watching people cross the finish line, but also the prep it took for them to get there. In my experience, Frank and Meg have a passion for sport, fitness and their community. I’ve taken Frank’s spin classes, and rocked the Strength Center Fitness Challenge with Meg. If you are a runner, swimmer or biker you are bound to know the Lowerys personally, or at least through six degrees of separation. Knowing how much of their lives are dedicated to improving triathlons and enriching the lives of others through fitness gives me the confidence to send my kids to the Lowery’s Aquatic Swim program happening this Fall.

My two older kids have been swimming since they were 18 months old, but it took them until this summer to learn how to swim using strokes. My son can doggie paddle like no other, but it’s about time he became a stronger swimmer. He loves to be outdoors, and wants to fish with his dad and ride on the boats. The compromise for that is that he needs to know how to swim. My daughter is like a little fish, and actually has great endurance. I would like to see her be active in something she loves to do. To enhance their skills, I can’t think of a better program for them then with the Lowerys.

Here are testimonials from parents of previous participants:

“Lowery’s Aquatics Swim program was an excellent program for preparing my two girls for the competitive swim team. They are now in the top level for their age group!”

“Lowery’s Swim program helped my son become a stronger and more confident swimmer”

“My son loved the program! he used it as cross training for his main sport, lacrosse. It really helped with his endurance.”

“We saw a huge difference in my daughter’s swimming ability. She learned all of the strokes and became such a strong swimmer”

“My children loved the coaches. They were hands on and made it such a positive experience”

This intensive aquatic program is designed for kids ages 6-16 to enhance their endurance, build strength and learn a flawless technique two times a week in a six week program. Classes start Monday, October 8th and run through November 14th, Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-5:15pm. For more information on the Lowery’s Aquatic Swim program, contact Katy Mason at 702.524.1106.

Hot Legs | Fitness

You do know that I am 5’1 on a GREAT day, right? So, you can imagine my reaction when a photographer (Lisa Sullivan of Mommedy) called me, “Hot Legs,” during a casual photo shoot at my girlfriend’s baby shower this past weekend. The funny thing is, just a few weeks prior, I was chatting with this group of girls (we have known each other for 15 years and like to refer to ourselves as the “HC”) about our nicknames. Almost every person in our group has a nickname except for me. We were all throwing different things out there, RockStar, for one, but nothing really seemed to stick. Until Lisa called me “Hot Legs”.

I kept saying, over and over, “I’m like the shortest person here!”, and, “You know I’m not even 5’1, right?!?!”. But for some reason, this name just stuck. All. Weekend. Long. Most likely because my personality tends to be more on the synical, serious side, so for an outsider of our group to call me Hot Legs, well, that just set the girls off. And, so, Hot Legs it is.

Today, I took the twins for a walk around my neighborhood. Three and half miles, hilly, pushing 50 LBS in the desert heat…not pretty. But as I was climbing those hills during my walk, I noticed that my calf muscles had some serious definition, and my thighs seemed a little less thick around the middle. I started to think of all the different leg work-outs I have been doing throughout my Strength Center Las Vegas Re-Invent Yourself Challenge, and I thought, “No wonder she called me Hot Legs!” Damn, Me!

For the last 4 weeks, I have felt the wrath of Liz’s RIPPED Class. I have endured the weight of Sheri’s Kettle Bells. I have squatted my way through Annette’s AMP’D class. Powered Yoga through Ottavio’s awesome flow, and allowed Adam to seriously kick my butt with these little purple bands wrapped around my calves that cause your butt and thighs to feel as though they were on fire. I have done all of this, and probably more (I did mention the 3.5 mile run in a hilly neighborhood). So, yes. I deserve the name, “Hot Legs”.

In addition to all of this, I have also been using this remarkable product, and yes, I’m going to say it now- they gave it to me for free. But, I have to tell you, I believe in it. It’s an all-natural cellulite cream and scrub called Smooth, founded by local aestheticians, Danielle Panaro and her sister Claudine Castellani.

The scrub is made of ground, organic, coffee beans, blended with essential oils. The lotion is also blended with natural, essential oils that penetrate past the outer layer of your skin, and seriously moisturizes and hydrates your body from the inside out, creating a “plumping” effect that minimizes the look of cellulite. Not only did I massage it all into my legs, stomach and arms, but I also used it on my declotage as I’ve noticed some, eh-hem, sun damage. After a few days of using the Smooth product, I noticed the unappealing area seemed to me, at least, to look appealing again. I also love the small detail of the sea shell added to the scrub in order to use every bit of the product in the jar. Such a clever idea! If you are interested in learning more about Smooth Smoothing Scrub and Lotion, local creators, Danelle and Claudine, are hosting a launch event this Wednesday at SkinBar in Henderson.

Along with the vitamins and other supplements from Pure Health I have been taking religiously, I did feel quite proud that my legs seemed to have become my finest feature. For so many years, I never even thought about my legs, but now I’ve noticed that they are one of the first areas I see instant gratification after a series of rigorous workouts. Actually, I guess now is a good a time as any to share with you my 4-week results!

strength center las vegas

Overall…I was down around .5″-1.5″ and lost a total of 5lbs of body fat. Truthfully, that was only after 3 weeks because a busy schedule detered me from the 4th week of consistent excersize. So, I’m pretty proud of what I was able to accomplish with a steady influx of fitness combined with healthier food choices.

Just like the RockStarMom name was given to me by my friends, I guess I should take this new nickname for what it’s worth as well! A sign of accomplishment that, when I put my mind to it, I can do anything. Even get the nickname Hot Legs when you’re only 5 feet tall!
